Hotai Motor Co (和泰汽車), which distributes Toyota and Lexus vehicles in Taiwan, yesterday launched the Toyota Prius PHV, a mid-sized plug-in hybrid priced at NT$1.6 million (US$52,363).

The launch is seen as part of Hotai’s efforts to diversify its product mix and capture the dominant share in the local market for eco-friendly autos, after electric car maker Tesla Motors Inc expanded its footprint in Taiwan last year.

Revenue from hybrid vehicles is expected to contribute more than 10 percent of Hotai’s total sales this year, company president Justin Su (蘇純興) said at a launch event in Taipei.

As for the company’s next step, Hotai is to introduce the Lexus LC luxury sports coupe in the second quarter and the Lexus LS in the fourth quarter, it said.    [FULL  STORY]

At an event promoting a book on his work philosophy and life goals, Hsu mentioned PX Mart’s Facebook-based strategy for targeting younger customers.

As he continued to speak on the matter of young people, he reportedly remarked that young people should “tolerate rather than complain about low pay” and accused them of “spending too much money.”

“Young people should not fuss over having lower salaries than other people. Withstand rather than complain; work diligently and your boss will see you one day,” Hsu said.

Tuesday approved a feasibility study on the construction of a 37.72-kilometer railway line to Hengchun Township in Taiwan’s southernmost Pingtung County.

The railway will be built from Neishi Station in Pingtung County’s Fangshan Township and include the building of seven new stations — New Fangshan, Fenggang, Zhukeng, Haikou, Checheng, Wuliting and Hengchun, according to the study.

After completion of the new railway line, an express train from Xinzuoying Station, the southern terminus of Taiwan’s bullet train (high-speed rail), to the planned Hengchun Station, from where it is about 10km to Kenting National Park at the southern tip of Taiwan, will take 90 minutes, while regular trains will take about two hours and 21 minutes.

About 8 million people visit Kenting National Park every year, according to the NDC.

Wen Tai-hsin (溫代欣), an official at the Railway Reconstruction Bureau under the Ministry of Transportation and Communications, said the proposed service would provide one train per hour during weekdays and two trains every hour on weekends and holidays.

The railway will initially be a single-track line, said Wen.

The estimated cost of the project is about NT$19.9 billion (US$649.48 million) with the earliest date of operation being June 2026, according to the study.    [SOURCE]

Day trading transaction tax cut

WORLD FIRST:The cut is expected to reduce state coffers by NT$3.75 billion and NT$10 billion daily turnover will be needed to offset that loss. Some lawmakers backed a bigger cut

The Legislative Yuan yesterday passed a bill to cut day trading transaction taxes by half for one year to boost stock transactions.

Lawmakers went ahead with the bill proposed last year when the local bourse was affected by sluggish trade.

Daily turnover has recovered above the NT$100 billion-level (US$3.26 billion) due to inflows to emerging markets, especially in Taiwan.

The new law, which will cut the stock transaction tax from 0.003 percent to 0.0015 percent, could take effect later this month, Minister of Finance Sheu Yu-jer (許虞哲) said.

The tax cut would reduce the state coffers by NT$3.75 billion a year, the minster said, adding it would require an NT$10 billion increase in average daily turnover on the local bourse to offset the revenue loss.    [FULL  STORY]
