Taiwan loses to U.S. in U-12 baseball world cup final

Taipei, Aug.6 (CNA) Taiwan won a silver medal after losing to the United States 2-7 in the final of the WBSC U-12 Baseball World Cup held in Tainan on Sunday, a biennial tournament contested by 12 teams from around the world.

The final game was played amid a cheerful atmosphere, with about 10,000 spectators packed into the southern Taiwanese stadium to root for the young players from both teams.

The U.S. was the first team to get a score on the board with four runs at the top of the third inning, edging out the Taiwanese team 4-0.

The local team was quick to bounce back with two runs in the bottom of the fourth, trailing the game at 4-2.    [FULL  STORY]

Kaohsiung U12s win UK soccer title

Kaohsiung’s Houjing Elementary School boys’ soccer team took first place at an international tournament in England and returned home to a warm reception over the weekend, with the coach and players saying the toughest part of the tournament was the cold and rainy English weather.

Parents, friends, sports officials and local supporters cheered the boys when they arrived at Kaohsiung International Airport on Saturday after winning the Under-12 championship at the English International Super Cup in Manchester.

The competition drew participants from across Europe and other countries, with the groupings from Under-7’s to youths levels for males and Under-8s to Under-18s for females.

Houjing coach Chen Tsung-pang said his team defeated opponents from England, Germany, the US and Nigeria, to win the Group A competition and advance to the title showdown against South Africa, the Group B winners.    [FULL  STORY]

Taiwan, US top groups at U12 World Cup

The US yesterday secured first place in Group B with a perfect 5-0 record and Taiwan picked up a victory in Group A on the final day of the round-robin opening round of the Under-12 Baseball World Cup in Tainan.

Taiwan and the US are favorites for the title, with three teams from each group advancing to the second round, which starts today, before the finale on Sunday.

It was a busy day for the hosts, beginning with an afternoon contest against Mexico.

Taiwan pitchers Han Shuo-heng and Chao Chia-cheng combined to shut out the Latin American visitors as the offense assured a 10-0 victory.    [FULL  STORY]

Taiwan finishes 12th in Deaflympics medal table

Taipei, July 31 (CNA) Taiwan finished 12th in the official medals table at the just concluded 23rd Summer Deaflympics in Turkey, but won the ninth most medals of any competing country.

Taiwan won four gold, five silver, and eight bronze medals during the competition, held from July 18 to 30 in Samsun.

According to the official medals table, which ranks countries by gold medals first, then silver and bronze, Taiwan, Belarus and Germany were tied for 11th with four gold medals each.

But Belarus placed 11th in the medal standings because it won nine silvers to Taiwan and Germany’s five, and Taiwan took 12th based on its eight bronzes to Germany’s three.    [FULL  STORY]

Poland, after beating China in the final of the women’s 540-kilogram indoor tug-of-war event 2-0.

The Taiwanese team became undefeated in the competition, in which only the six best teams in the 540-kg category at last year’s World Indoor Tug of War Championships participated. In addition to Taiwan and China, the other four teams represented Switzerland, South Africa, Ireland and the Netherlands.

Taiwan won all five matches in the round-robin first round of competitions to advance to the semifinals. It got past South Africa in the semifinals with a 2-0 score.

Wen Tzu-yun wins silver at World Games

Taipei, July 26 (CNA) Taiwan’s Wen Tzu-yun (文姿云) won a silver medal on Wednesday in the women’s kumite 55-kg karate category at the 2017 World Games in Wroclaw, Poland, losing to Brazil’s Valeria Kumizaki 0-1 in the final.

Wen, a graduate student at National Taiwan Normal University, said that although she has participated in numerous tournaments, this was the first time she has competed in the World Games, which attracts the world’s best athletes.

The occasion increased the pressure but she is happy to have won a silver medal, Wen added.

Wen’s medal brought Taiwan’s total haul to four silver and three bronze medals at the World Games.

Wen clinched a bronze medal in the women’s kumite 55-kg category at the Karate 1-Premier League hosted by the World Karate Federation (WKF) in Rabat, Morocco, in April.    [FULL  STORY]

ahead of the 2017 Summer Universiade. The international sporting event for university students is second only to the Olympics in scale, and is set to take place in Taipei, from August 19 – 30.

The interior ministry is planning to open the Central Security Command Center for the games on the same day that the athletes’ village opens. Interior Minister Yeh Jiunn-rong will oversee operations, while the police and various government agencies will offer support.

Yeh said that the Taipei City Government, which is hosting the games, has already created an overall security plan, following a directive from the International University Sports Federation (FISU). The plan incorporates not only the police, but also advanced technology, including drones, explosives detectors, and explosion-proof robots. Annual Liaoluo Bay swimming event in Kinmen has record draw

Kinmen County on Sunday drew a record number of participating teams and swimmers this year.

According to the Kinmen Daily News, a total of 3,180 people from 89 teams joined the event in Liaoluo Bay (料羅灣), situated on the southern coast of the county’s main island.

The Liaoluo Bay race, now in its 15th year, requires swimmers to swim 1,500 meters out to sea before swimming another 1,500 meters back to shore.

A 7-kilometer race between Kinmen and Xiamen, which is normally held in conjunction with the Liaoluo event, had to be suspended this year because of security concerns related to the upcoming BRICS Summit in Xiamen, the county’s Tourism Department said in an earlier report.    [FULL  STORY]

TAIPEI (Taiwan News)–Chang Li-hsiao (張力孝) won the gold medal in the men’s singles bowling at the 23rd Summer Deaflympics in Samsun city, Turkey.

Chang, nicknamed the “left-handed geek” because he bowls left-handed, obtained the gold medal after competing against his South Korean and Russian opponents.

President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文), Vice President Chen Chien-jen (陳建仁), Premier Lin Chuan (林全) and Education Minister Pan Wen-chung (潘文忠) sent their messages congratulating the athlete as soon as they found out about his victory, according to the Sports Administration and Ministry of Education.

During the Deaflympics in 2005, Taiwan team won nine golds, four silvers and three bronzes. Chang himself won four golds and two silvers.    [FULL  STORY]
