TAIPEI (CNA) — Under the effects of northeasterly winds, rainy weather is expected across Taiwan through Monday, when another front will be approaching the country, according to the Central Weather Bureau (CWB).

On Sunday, the mercury fell to 13 degrees Celsius in northern Taiwan in the early morning — the lowest throughout the country, the CWB said.

In areas north of central Taiwan as well as Yilan and Hualien counties, temperatures dropped to 14-16 degrees early Sunday, while those in southern Taiwan and Taitung County slid to 17-18 degrees, it said.

Although the seasonal wind will begin to weaken during the day, temperatures throughout Taiwan will rise by only 1-2 degrees due to a cloud system from southern China, the CWB said.    [FULL  STORY]

The CWB reports high temperatures will drop to below 20 degrees Celsius in northern Taiwan, 22 to 26 degrees Celsius in Taichung (台中), 25 to 28 degrees Celsius in Kaohsiung (高雄), and 21 to 25 degrees Celsius in Hualien (花蓮).

warm, as cold weather was forecast for the next few days.

Cats and dogs common in Taiwan prefer temperatures from 20°C to 30°C, Jonghsin Animal Hospital’s 16th Agricultural Zone Branch veterinarians said, adding that while their fur is usually enough to keep cats and dogs warm, those that are old, short-haired, small or have chronic health issues could be more vulnerable to the cold.

A cat or dog that is uncomfortable in the cold could quiver or become lethargic, while signs of severe distress include weakness, stiff muscles, slowed breathing and heartbeat, and even loss of consciousness, they said.

Owners should provide indoor heating or an outside shelter, they said, adding that heat pads for beds should be wrapped in blankets or towels to avoid contact burns.

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — While a northeast monsoon is bringing cold and wet weather to northern Taiwan today, a new cold air wave will cause the mercury to plummet down to 11 degrees Celsius by Monday, according to Meteorologist Daniel Wu (吳德榮).

Wu said that the daytime highs in northern Taiwan will only reach between 18 and 19 degrees. As for low temperatures, Wu pointed out that the lowest temperature in Taipei was 16.7 degrees this morning and 15.5 degrees yesterday morning, while New Taipei City’s Sanzhi District saw a low of 14.2 degrees this morning and recorded a low of 13.4 degrees yesterday morning.

Wu said that the coast and mountainous areas in the north and northeast will see heavy rain today, while there will also be local showers in the greater Taipei basin. He said the main cause is that the northeast monsoon has been affected by topographic uplift.

The Central Weather Bureau (CWB) today has issued a heavy rain advisory for four counties and cities in northern Taiwan, including Taipei city, New Taipei City, Keelung City, and Yilan County. At the same time, it has also issued a strong wind advisory (over land) for all of Taiwan, except for Nantou County and Chiayi City.   [FULL  STORY]

However, another wave of the northeast monsoon is expected to arrive Tuesday night and the CWB urged the public to remain alert over the day to night temperature differential.

According to the CWB, night temperatures are forecast to fall to 18-21 degrees across Taiwan late Tuesday, while the monsoon is expected to bring rain to northern areas, in particular, the greater Taipei area, and people are advised to take an umbrella if they go outdoors.    [FULL  STORY]

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Central Weather Bureau (CWB) predicts that as a northeast monsoon strengthens, strong winds will be observed on the coastal areas and northern Taiwan will see cold, wet weather throughout the weekend, with lows dipping to 18 degrees Celsius.

As a northeast monsoon lashes Taiwan today, the CWB predicts that cloud cover will increase in northern and eastern Taiwan. The north coast of Keelung and mountainous areas of Taipei and Yilan will have extended periods of rain and will be prone to local heavy downpours. However, central and southern Taiwan will see partly cloud to sunny skies.

The CWB predicts that there is a 70 to 100 percent chance of rain in Taoyuan and areas north, as well as Yilan. The CWB early this morning also issued a heavy rain advisory for Taipei, New Taipei City, and Keelung.

In terms of temperatures, the lowest recorded temperature this morning was 15.8 degrees in Sanzhi and Fuguijiao in New Taipei City. The CWB predicts that during the day, highs will range between 19 and 22 degrees in northern Taiwan, 24 to 26 degrees in eastern Taiwan, and 28 to 30 degrees in central and southern Taiwan.    [FULL  STORY]
