Taipei, Aug. 4 (CNA) The Central Weather Bureau (CWB) warned Tuesday of the 201508040011t0001potential damage Super Typhoon Soudelor may cause Taiwan, describing it as a “single wolf” typhoon.

Though the storm’s center is still 2,000 kilometers away, it is moving at a speed of 21 kilometers per hour toward northern Taiwan, and the CWB urged the public to be on the alert as the typhoon approaches.

The bureau said it could issue sea and land warnings for the typhoon on Thursday.

Describing Soudelor as a “single wolf,” the bureau said it would bring heavy winds and rain to Taiwan but would sweep across the island quickly rather than hovering for an extended period of time.     [FULL  STORY]

Pacific is currently chock-a-block with typhoons. Across Asia, people are watching the forecasts to see whether a monster storm is going to come swirling their way, and the news stations are doing their best to give them up-to-date and easy-to-understand information.

In Taiwan, the Next TV presentation led one viewer to wonder if the graphics team weren’t perhaps Evangelion fans.

@dorabmon, a Taiwanese who tweets in Japanese, posted this picture while watching the weather. It reads, “As usual, Next TV’s Evangelion typhoon graphics are needlessly cool.”

To be honest, the first thing I thought of was a giant flying pizza, but then pepperoni is

closer to my heart than anime. True fans of the popular series thought the comparison was on point though, and the picture has been picked up a host of discussion sites and message boards.

That last commenter has a point, since the Japanese weather graphics tend towards the annoyingly cutesy.

Three Tropical Storms at Once

Three tropical storms are now moving through the Pacific. Tropical Storm Chan-Hom could become a super typhoon.

Tropical Storm Chan-hom passed near Rota Island Sunday, bringing heavy rain, gusty map_specnewsdct-10_ltst_4namus_enus_650x366winds and high surf to the Marianas. Guam is 14 hours ahead of U.S. Eastern daylight time.

As of late Sunday afternoon, the NWS office on Guam measured 11.77 inches of rain from Chan-hom. Rota Island also picked up 7-10 inches of rain. By early Monday morning, only patchy areas of locally heavy rain remained near Guam and the Marianas. Winds were diminishing, but high seas were expected to persist into Monday.

Andersen Air Force Base, Guam, reported a peak wind gust to 62 mph Sunday afternoon. Guam International Airport just east of Hagatna, Guam, clocked a peak gust to 43 mph, while Rota Island measured a peak gust to 37 mph.

Chan-hom is poised to become a typhoon again by Monday and could be a significant threat to parts of east Asia late this week.     [FULL  STORY]
