Taipei, Nov. 26 (CNA) An iconic bishopwood tree that stands in a picturesque rice 64478626field in the eastern county of Taitung has recovered 60 percent since it was uprooted by Typhoon Matmo more than one year ago. The tree, scientifically known as a bischofia javanica, has sprouted leaves again, and birds are nesting in its branches. The bandages on its trunk have also been removed.

Japanese tree doctor Tokuo Yamashita examined the bishopwood tree Thursday and said it was healing well.

“It can now be transferred to an ordinary ward,” he joked, to cheers from a group of tourists who had gathered there. “It’s almost ready to be discharged.”

It was Yamashita’s fourth visit to Chihshang Township since the tree was damaged in July 2014.     [FULL  STORY]
