TAIPEI–A tropical storm that has formed off Guam Friday is not expected to threaten Taiwan, the Central Weather Bureau (CWB) said, with an expert explaining that it is not uncommon for tropical storms to form in December.

As of 2 p.m. Friday, Tropical Storm Melor was centered 2,370 kilometers southeast of Eluanbi, the southernmost tip of Taiwan, moving at a speed of 27 kilometers per hour in a west-northwesterly direction toward the Philippines, according to the bureau.

Melor, the 27th storm of the 2015 Pacific typhoon season, was packing sustained winds of 65 kilometers per hour, with gusts reaching 90 kilometers per hour, the bureau said.

The storm could move toward the Philippines, but chances are slim that it will affect Taiwan directly, according to forecasters.     [FULL  STORY]
