TAIPEI, Taiwan — The R.O.C.’s new ambassador to the Holy See yesterday expressed confidence over the
nation’s diplomatic ties with the Vatican as he was sworn in to become the top envoy to Taiwan’s only diplomatic ally in Europe.
Ambassador Matthew Lee (李世明), the nation’s former top envoy to Jordan, told local media that he had some doubt over Taiwan-Vatican ties before he was first appointed to the post as he had read media reports that hinted the ally could soon recognize Beijing instead of Taipei.
However, after he came back to Taiwan to start preparing to take over the diplomatic post and received more detailed information about bilateral relations, Lee said he become assured that bilateral ties are strong and stable.
The cordial relationship is exemplified by frequent visits of high-level officials from the Holy See to Taiwan, Lee noted. [FULL STORY]
