Island could become global leader in wind power: ECCT

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – The progress Taiwan is making in the development of wind energy is likely to result in the creation of 20,000 new jobs in 2025, when the island will produce 5.5 gigawatt of electricity from wind power, experts said Thursday (April 25).
The European Chamber of Commerce Taiwan (ECCT) organized a Global Offshore Wind Summit in Taipei with the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA), the United Daily News reported.
The ECCT estimated that if the target of 5.5 GW is reached, Taiwan could receive NT$880 billion (US$28.4 billion) in investment in the sector, 20,000 extra jobs, additional construction projects and the development of a whole new domestic supply chain for the industry.
Economics Minister Shen Jong-chin (沈榮津) said Taiwan’s west coast was the site for some of the world’s most effective wind energy stations, and that if everything went according to plan, by 2025 green energy would account for 20 percent of the country’s supply, attracting even more investment in sectors like wind power.
