TAIPEI, Taiwan — A man who brutally murdered an 8-year-old girl in 2015 will spend

Kung Chung-an is escorted by a police officer. (CNA)

the rest of his life behind bars after a top court rejected his appeal.
Kung Chung-an’s (龔重安) defense argued that he had committed the crime due to mental illness and that, given proper treatment, he could be rehabilitated.

The Supreme Court wasn’t persuaded, and said the cruel nature of the act warranted life imprisonment and the deprivation of his civil rights for life.

Around 4:30 p.m. on May 8, 2015, Kung — armed with a knife — jumped the wall surrounding his alma mater, Wenhua Elementary School in Taipei’s Beitou District.

He went into the girls’ bathroom, where he grabbed a student surnamed Liu and cut her throat.    [FULL  STORY]
