Taipei mayor prepares to launch Universiade torch relay

Taipei is the host of this year’s student games, the second largest multisport event after the Olympics. The games pit the world’s top university athletes against one another. The Taipei games will be held from August 18 through 30 and athletes from over 150 countries will compete.

The Universiade’s torch-lighting ceremony is always held in Turin, the host of the first Universiade in 1959. Ko took part in a practice run for the torch-lighting ceremony on Monday evening.

Indigenous Taiwanese culture is set to feature prominently in the torch lighting ceremony. Performers will include Golden Melody Award winning Atayal singer Inka Mbing and Paiwan modern dance troupe Tjimur Dance Theatre.    [FULL  STORY]
