TAIPEI — A total of 74,802 couples in Taiwan tied the knot in the first half of this year, with 13.1 percent of them between a Taiwanese and a person from another country, the Ministry of the Interior said in a report released Sunday.

The number of marriages registered in the first six months was down by 4,407 from the same period of 2015, the report said.

There were 9,791 transnational marriages between Taiwanese citizens and foreign nationals during that time, down by 174 from the same period last year.

The report showed that 44.9 percent of the cross-border marriages involved unions between Taiwanese and spouses from China, Hong Kong and Macau, while 31.8 percent were between Taiwanese and spouses from Southeast Asia.     [FULL  STORY]
