An area of southeastern Taiwan popular with hikers is being closed to the public following a spate of bear sightings. The closure is set to last for 15 days.
Footage shot by members of the Tienma Mountaineering Team shows a bear standing atop a shelf in a mountain cabin. A V-shaped stripe of white on its chest shows the hallmark of a Formosan black bear.
It is thought the smell of cooking food may have spiked the bear’s interest in this cabin. Whatever the cause, this isn’t an isolated incident. This bear break-in is the fourth this month around a high-altitude trail leading to the popular tourist spot of Lake Jiaming.
The hiking trail will be closed into early September in the hope of avoiding potentially dangerous encounters. [FULL STORY]
