TAIPEI, Taiwan — Police last year arrested 58,707 suspects for 54,873 violations of the Narcotics Hazard Prevention Act, of which over 70 percent involved Schedule-2 narcotics like amphetamine and marijuana, according to new government data.
The Ministry of the Interior on Sunday released data showing that 39,097 violations of the drug act, or 71.2 percent, involved drugs categorized as Schedule-2 narcotic in Taiwan’s four-tiered classification system.
Schedule-1 drugs such as heroin and morphine accounted for 13,991 of the cases, or 25.5 percent.
Those who manufacture, transport or sell Schedule-1 narcotics are subject to life imprisonment or death, according to the Narcotics Hazard Prevention Act.
