Taipei, Jan. 19 (CNA) Oscar-winning director Martin Scorsese said Thursday in Taipei that his dream of filming the historical drama “Silence” was achieved in Taiwan, and he hopes to give the film as a “gift” to the Taiwanese people.

“It’s an extraordinary thing to be here to present the film, a film that I have been working on for many, many years,” the 74-year-old American director said at the premiere of “Silence” in Taiwan.

“It has been a dream of mine and that was brought to fruition here in this extraordinary country of Taiwan. It was a great inspiration and I hope that it does justice to all of you,” said Scorsese, who had attempted to make the film for three decades.

Scorsese attended the Thursday event along with the film’s producer Emma Tillinger Koskoff and co-writer Jay Cocks. Taiwanese director Hou Hsiao-hsien (侯孝賢) made an appearance to show support for the film.    [FULL  STORY]

website Guancha.cn that he is a supporter of Taiwanese independence. His denial, made via a statement on Facebook, comes as his fourth feature film, “The Village of No Return,” is set to be released in cinemas on Jan. 28.

“The Village of No Return” is co-funded by interests in Taiwan and China, and features actors from both countries.

Chinese media have for some time accused the award-winning filmmaker of backing Taiwanese independence, based on his support of the 2014 Sunflower Movement — which opposed the signing of a services and trade pact between Taiwan and China and led to the occupation of the Legislative Yuan by protesters — but until now the director has remained silent about the issue.

Chen’s sudden address of the accusations has led some in Taiwan to speculate that he has faced pressure from Beijing, Chinese-language Liberty Times reports.    [FULL  STORY]

Lunar New Year holiday, Taiwanese director Chen Yu-hsun denied allegations from China that he was a supporter of Taiwan Independence.

Similar accusations against other artists and entertainers in the past have led to their work being banned from China, at least for a period.

Chen’s latest movie is “The Village of No Return,” the type of film which usually tops the box office during the Lunar New Year holidays. In addition, the comedy, about a Taoist priest who brings a mysterious weapon which wipes out villagers’ memories, also features Taiwanese superstar Shu Qi, Joseph Chang and Hong Kong comedian Eric Tsang.

Chen previously directed the comedies “Zone Pro Site” and “Tropical Fish.”    [FULL  STORY]

the Recovery of the South China Sea Islands will open to the public free of charge Dec. 9-19 at Taipei-based Academia Historica, Taiwan’s foremost institution dedicated to studying and recording the nation’s history.

Jointly organized by the historical organization and the Ministry of the Interior, the exhibition focuses on the three themes of “Historical Developments,” “Key to the Southern Territories” and “Sustainable Peace.” It aims to raise public awareness of Taiping Island and its history, measures taken by the Republic of China (Taiwan) to effectively govern the island and the importance the government attaches to South China Sea issues.

On Dec. 12, 1946, two ROC frigates, the Taiping and Chungyeh, arrived at Taiping Island, the largest of the Nansha (Spratly) Islands, marking the completion of the recovery of the South China Sea islands by the country. According to the MOI, infrastructure projects on the islands such as a hospital and airport were completed in the following decades and incorporated into the nation’s administrative system, laying a solid foundation for the role that the ROC now plays in the South China Sea.

“The last exhibition on Taiping Island was held two years ago and put much focus on historical documents,” said Chen Shing-li, a section chief of the MOI’s Department of Land Administration responsible for organizing the exhibition. “This time we opted for a softer tone.”

According to the official, this year’s event changes course by, for example, showcasing the daily lives of people on Taiping Island through photos they took while there, as well as video clips of interviews with the former residents.    [FULL  STORY]
