performance “Smoke” in Taiwan beginning Friday, bringing the poetic dance production back to the country for the first time in over a decade.

Inspired by late French novelist Marcel Proust’s “In Search of Lost Time” (“Remembrance of Things Past”), the production follows a mysterious woman as she remembers the love and hate among her family members. The dance piece, however, has no linear storyline.

“The entire dance is about memory,” Cloud Gate founder and artistic director Lin Hwai-min said at a press conference in Taipei Thursday.

“What is the dance about? Everyone could have their own interpretation, but one of Pablo Neruda’s poems says, ‘Love is so short, forgetting is so long,'” Lin said, giving a poetic response to his self-raised question.     [FULL  STORY]

racked up numerous international awards in his career, but today he is aiming for the Oscars with his latest movie The Assassin.

Hou, on tour in the United States ahead of the upcoming US launch of the movie, sat with Agence France-Presse to discuss The Assassin – among 81 foreign Oscar hopefuls – Hollywood and his next project.

Hou acknowledged that The Assassin, a slow-burning movie set in ninth-century China, may not appeal to a wide American audience more used to Hollywood films with a strong narrative and high drama.

“I think they will probably fall asleep,” he laughed. “I think people will probably have problems understanding what the movie is about.”     [FULL  STORY]

ceremony Tuesday at the Culture Center of Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office (TECO) in Los Angeles, in an effort to promote restaurants which serve authentic Taiwanese cuisine.

Nearly one hundred restaurants run by Taiwanese expats were awarded the “Gourmet Taiwan-Overseas Quality Restaurant” label, an initiative sponsored by Taiwan’s Overseas Community Affairs Council to bring Taiwanese delicacies under the international spotlight, throughout the United States and Canada for the past three years.

Steve Hsia, director-general of TECO in Los Angeles, said that Taiwan’s cuisine is so famous that it has been chosen as one of the top 10 best destinations for foodies by CNN. And with this restaurants award program, it can attract more foreign visitors to Taiwan to enjoy the country’s unique delicacies, he added.

The poll to which Hsia referred was in fact heavily skewed as the large majority of people taking part were Taiwanese internet users voting for themselves, though this has not precluded its usefulness as a publicity tool.     [FULL  STORY]

“So we just want everybody to know how sorry we are. Because of the typhoon, the government called this a typhoon day. And we had to go on to Abu Dhabi,” Jon Bon Jovi told local reporters at Taipei Songshan Airport, before departing Taiwan for Abu Dhabi on a private jet. “But we’re brokenhearted. You know we came with the best of intentions to perform for our fans. And I hope that we can come back next year,” he said. The band last played in Taiwan in 1995.

Some 200 fans who went to the airport to see off the band sang the popular Chinese-language song The Moon Represents My Heart in farewell to Jon, pianist and keyboardist David Bryan and drummer Tico Torres. It was the song, made famous by the late Teresa Teng and learned by every student of Mandarin, that Jon sang in a video that was posted on the internet in August and dedicated to his Chinese fans.     [FULL  STORY]
