MediaTek Inc (聯發科) shares yesterday shed as much as 2.19 percent amid speculation that the nation’s largest handset chip designer is Broadcom Ltd’s new buyout target.

The speculation came after Broadcom’s US$117 billion hostile takeover bid for US chipmaker Qualcomm Inc was thwarted last week by US President Donald Trump because of concern over national security.

After the Broadcom-Qualcomm debacle, the Singapore-based chip company has set its sights on Qualcomm’s nearest rivals — MediaTek, Xilinx Inc and Cirrus Logic Inc — as potential targets, the Chinese-language Economic Daily News reported yesterday.

By acquiring MediaTek, Broadcom would broaden its exposure to Apple Inc’s supply chain and enhance its 5G technological capability, the newspaper said, citing a report by the US-based The Motley Fool.    [FULL  STORY]

The first step in tapping into the market is to expand the scale of IoT devices, although it could make slim profits by offering Internet connections in the initial stage, Taiwan Mobile said.

The company is collaborating with Asian telecom alliance Bridge Alliance, Nokia, light-emitting diodes manufacturers Everlight Electronics Co (億光) and Lite-On Technology Corp (光寶), and “smart” meter module supplier Glory Technology Service Inc (皇輝科技) to explore IoT business opportunities.

The automative, “smart” home, wearable devices and utilities segments are the fastest-growing areas in the vast IoT market, the nation’s No. 2 telecom operator said.

months February, but one of the main reasons was the Lunar New Year holiday, reports said Tuesday.

Following 18 months of year-on-year rises, the figure for February 2018 fell by 3.8 percent year-on-year to US$32.45 billion, the government said.

However, if the first two months of the year were calculated, the total of US$75.52 billion still amounted to a rise of 8.3 percent compared to the first two months of 2017.

In addition to February’s Lunar New Year, another element in the sudden drop was the advent of the low season for information technology products, the Central News Agency reported. The IT and electronic sectors saw their export orders for February fall by 8.6 percent compared to the same month last year.    [FULL  STORY]

There’s growing concern in Taiwan about the “magnet effect” of the Chinese market

Financial Supervisory Commission Chairman Wellington Koo (CNA photo)

attracting capital away from the Taiwan market. That’s in light of Beijing’s move to give special treatment to Taiwanese companies that it sees as strategically important.

Earlier this month, China approved the Shanghai listing of a subsidiary of Taiwan’s Foxconn, the world’s largest contract electronics maker. The company is hoping that listing the subsidiary – Foxconn Industrial Internet Co. Ltd. (FII) – can help fund eight projects worth 27.3 billion RMB ($4.31 billion).

The chairman of Taiwan’s Financial Supervisory Commission, Wellington Koo, responded to concerns on Monday in a legislative committee. He said that in an era of globalization, a small, open economy like Taiwan has to deal with the impact of capital flow from many countries. Koo said that China’s lightning speed approval of FII’s IPO in just 36 days won’t have a major impact.    [FULL  STORY]

The decision will facilitate money transfers from bank accounts directly to the cards, according to CNA.

During the first stage of development, only three banks will offer the automatic money transfer function;  Fu Bon bank, Shin Kong Bank, and CTBC Bank. Eventually 12 banks will join the initiative.

Taiwan delegation seeks business opportunities in Manila

Radio Taiwan International
Date: 2018/03/19

Manila, March 19 (CNA) A delegation of 27 Taiwanese suppliers on Monday held talks with more than 150 potential foreign buyers and investors and 90 firms in Manila as part of a trip to explore business and trade opportunities in the Philippines.

The delegation organized by the Ministry of Economic Affairs and the Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA) is made up of representatives from the information and communications technology, automotive parts, clean energy, machinery, lighting, electric vehicle and electronics appliances industries.

Delegation head Chuang Suo-hang (莊碩漢), TAITRA vice chairman, said efforts by the Philippine government to develop the local manufacturing sector provide many opportunities for Taiwanese businesses.

Chuang suggests that Taiwanese companies should view Southeast Asia as an extended market for domestic products rather than a production base, as the best way to generate economic growth in Taiwan.    [FULL  STORY]

Compal forecasts 15% non-PC growth

ORIGINAL STRENGTH: Although the assembler has been trying to diversify its business away from PCs, the firm predicted it would outperform others in the segment this year

Compal Electronics Inc (仁寶), which has been contracted to assemble Apple Watches, yesterday said it expects non-PC product shipments to grow between 15 and 20 percent year-on-year next quarter, as it is to start shipping new products for a key customer by summer at the earliest.

The company has for years been working to diversify into new areas in search of growth beyond the sputtering PC industry. It last year made significant progress as its non-PC business was responsible for more than 30 percent of its overall revenue totaling NT$887.66 billion (US$30.4 billion).

Compal broke into the Apple Watch supply chain in the first half of last year, ending Quanta Computer Inc’s (廣達) position as sole assembler for the US firm.

“We have invested resources in developing new products in the fourth quarter of last year, which will put pressure on the margin in the non-PC segment in the initial stage,” company president Ray Chen (陳瑞聰) said in response to an investor’s question about Compal’s venture into smart watches and, more specifically, the Apple Watch. “We will ramp up production of the product by late second quarter this year, or early third quarter.”  [FULL  STORY]
