Taipei, Feb. 27 (CNA) Consumer confidence has been undermined by volatility in equity markets at home and abroad with the consumer confidence index (CCI) for February down slightly from a month earlier, National Central University said Tuesday.

The February CCI stood at 87.38 points, down 0.31 from January after the stock market sub-index fell from a month earlier, the university said.

The CCI is made up of six sub-indexes that reflect confidence in consumer prices, employment, family finances, local economic climate, the stock market and possible purchase of durable goods over the next six months.

The survey was conducted from Feb. 15-19, meaning that consumer sentiment was impacted by the plunge suffered by the local equity market, with the weighted index falling 754.48 points or 6.78 percent during the week of Feb. 5-9, after Wall Street suffered heavy losses amid fears of rising interest rates.    [FULL  STORY]

Audio electronics maker Merry Electronics Co (美律) yesterday said revenue would drop drastically this quarter as demand freezes due to the consumer electronics sector entering a slow season.

The seasonal weakness will take a heavy toll on headsets for entertainment devices and speakers for mobile phones, the two biggest revenue sources for Merry, in the first three months of this year, company spokesman Allen Huang (黃朝豊) told investors in Taipei.

“Revenue will hit the bottom in February,” he said. “First-quarter revenue will be flat, or slightly lower than in the same period last year.”

Merry posted NT$4.52 billion (US$154.64 million) in revenue for the first quarter of last year.    [FULL  STORY]

DRAM chipmaker Nanya Technology Corp (南亞科技) expects this year to again be lucrative, given vigorous server DRAM demand and cautious capacity expansion plans from the world’s major suppliers to curb oversupply risks, a company executive said yesterday.

A 35 percent year-on-year jump in DRAM prices last year helped boost Nanya Technology’s net profit to an all-time high of NT$40.29 billion (US$1.38 billion), including a disposal gain of NT$32.15 billion after the sale of its stake in Micron Technology Inc.

“There is a big chance that the company’s operating profit will be higher than last year,” Nanya Technology president Lee Pei-ing (李培瑛) told reporters at a media gathering.

“The industry’s uptrend only kicked off in the second half and is to extend into the whole of this year,” Lee said. “The strongest demand comes from servers and data centers.”

Chunghwa Telecom Co (CHT, 中華電信) yesterday said it plans to restart an asset rejuvenation program for a number of underutilized properties this year by converting them into social housing units.

The announcement represented a U-turn on the nation’s biggest telecom’s conservative stance over its idle properties at a time when the company is facing flagging revenue.

Chunghwa Telecom saw its revenue contract by 1.1 percent year-on-year to NT$227.55 billion (US$7.76 billion) last year, falling short of its estimate of NT$231 billion, attributable to a faster-than-expected decline in voice call services.

“Chunghwa Telecom owns immense assets with a big portion of them being underutilized for a long time. Those properties were only for telecom facilities in the past,” chairman David Cheng (鄭優) told a news conference yesterday.    [FULL  STORY]
