Taiwan ranked 13th on Economic Freedom list

Radio Taiwan International
Date: 2018-02-02

Taiwan has been ranked 13th on the 2018 Index of Economic Freedom published Friday by the Wall Street Journal and US think tank the Heritage Foundation. The index surveyed 186 economic entities around the world.

Taiwan’s ranking was two places lower than last year but was still the country’s second-highest ranking in the last ten years. The country was given a score of 76.6, which was slightly higher than last year’s 76.5.

The National Development Council (NDC) said Taiwan performed best in the area of financial soundness, as the national debt as a percentage of GDP has dropped over the last three years. The area of investment freedom was a drag on Taiwan’s ranking, however, with limits on foreign investment and use of land.    [FULL  STORY]

Japanese manufacturers are increasingly growing the herbs in-island, reported the Nikkei Asian Review.

The increase in demand for Chinese medicine style herbs is thought to correspond with the rise of Japan’s aging society as well as a more “health-conscious younger generation.”

Some Japanese farmers began to grow Chinese herbs when tea prices began to fall while others started as the market expanded.

Tsumara & Co. is the largest manufacturer of traditional Chinese medicine, accounting for over 80% of Japan’s herbal market, according to Nikkei.    [FULL  STORY]

Taipei, Feb. 2 (CNA) Car sales in Taiwan for January rose more than 10 percent from a month earlier, with market analysts saying that with the Lunar New Year holiday approaching, strong buying has been sparked.

According to data compiled by the Ministry of Transportation and Communications, car sales for January totaled 47,936 units, up 13.6 percent from a month earlier and also up 5.5 percent from a year earlier.

Analysts said the increase in sales also resulted from car manufacturers’ efforts to launch new models to boost buying, while the 2018 Taipei Auto Show, which ran Dec. 30-Jan. 7 also served as a catalyst for consumer interest.

Buying in January followed an increase in sales in 2017, when car sales on the local market totaled 444,469 units, up 1.1 percent from a year earlier, and although the increase was small, sales still hit a 12-year high and beat market expectations.    [FULL  STORY]

Taipei, Feb. 1 (CNA) The momentum of the local manufacturing and service sectors continued to accelerate in January, with the indexes gauging activity in the two sectors moving higher on the back of improving economic fundamentals at home and abroad.

The Chung-Hua Institution for Economic Research (CIER) said Thursday that the Purchasing Managers Index (PMI) for the manufacturing sector for January rose 1.0 from the previous month to 59.0. It was the 23rd consecutive month in which the PMI remained above 50, which indicates steady growth, the leading Taiwanese economic think tank said.

It was the longest stretch of expansion in the local manufacturing sector since the CIER started releasing the PMI data in July 2012, the think tank said.

Meantime, the non-manufacturing index (NMI), which covers the service sector, also rose 2.6 from a month earlier to 55.9 in January, marking expansion for the 11th consecutive month, the think tank added.    [FULL  STORY]
