For 2017, Uber said Taiwanese travelers most often use Uber in the US, Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia and Hong Kong. Taiwanese travelers enjoy Uber for its convenience and easy-to-use function, the company said.

Uber’s statistics showed that its global subscribers broke the 5 billion mark in 2017. Its service is offered in 491 cities out of 80 countries around the world.

Uber may be popular with Taiwanese nationals traveling abroad. But the company has hit a number of legal roadblocks in breaking in to Taiwan’s domestic market. Compromises with local taxi operators have allowed the company to continue operating, however.    [FULL  STORY]

The Taiwan Bicycle Exporters’ Association yesterday voiced optimism about the outlook of the nation’s bicycle manufacturing industry next year, given an upward trend in the average selling price of bike exports.

In the first 10 months of this year, the average selling price of an exported bicycle was US$540.76, a 10.5 percent increase from US$489.53 in the same period last year, data compiled by the Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA, 外貿協會) showed.

The unit price reflects the competitiveness of Taiwanese bicycle manufacturers, association secretary-general Gina Chang (張蕙娟) told reporters after a news conference, adding that the decline in bike export numbers might be short term.

Far Eastern Bank failed to set up adequate information security and data protection of its overall internal banking system, the Financial Supervisory Commission (FSC) said in imposing the NT$8 million fine.

In October, the bank reported to the FSC that its computer system had been infected with malware that had affected some of its computers and servers as well as the Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication’s (SWIFT) network.

Surplus weighs on LCD prices

PRICING PRESSURE: Aside from an influx of new capacities from China, LCD makers are confronted by a slower-than-expected migration to larger-screen LCD TVs, IDC said

Taipei Times
Date: Dec 13, 2017
By: Lisa Wang  /  Staff reporter

Global LCD panel makers are facing mounting pricing pressure this quarter as a run-up in new capacities from China’s advanced factories has tilted the supply-demand balance, boding ill for shipment prospects, market researcher IDC said yesterday.

With more production lines starting to crank out large-sized panels, a supply surplus was seen last quarter in the LCD TV panel segment, a major profit contributor for most panel makers, IDC said in its latest quarterly report.

That led to a price correction early last quarter, snapping several quarters of price hikes since the second half of last year, IDC said.

“We are afraid that the growth momentum in the third quarter, a peak season for the industry, is not going to carry into the fourth quarter due to diminishing demand for large-sized LCD panels,” the report said.    [FULL  STORY]
