Radio Taiwan International
Date: 2017-12-01

Taiwan’s economy is continuing a steady recovery. That’s according to the Chung-Hua Institution for Economic Research (CIER), one of the nation’s leading think tanks.

CIER released their Purchasing Manager’s Index (PMI) and Non-Manufacturing Index (NMI) for November. Both figures are showing expansion. The PMI set a record for the longest period of consecutive expansion, at 21 months.

CIER said the figures show that Taiwan’s economy is in steady recovery. But the institution remains cautiously optimistic on the manufacturing and non-manufacturing sectors for the next half-year.

CIER director Wu Chung-shu said domestic consumption will be the key to sustaining growth in the coming year.    [FULL  STORY]

The National Development Council (NDC) has set a new target for Taiwan’s economy in 2018. This includes GDP growth of between 2.4% and 2.6% and a sub-3.8% unemployment rate.

The target for GDP growth is close to the estimate from the government’s statistics office, set at 2.29%. Chen Mei-ling, the Council’s director, said their conservative target is based on the lukewarm outlook for next year’s exports and domestic consumption.

The NDC also sets its forecast for public investment and consumption at 3.36% and 2.29%, respectively. Both figures are slightly more optimistic than the statistics office. The council said the number is based on the government’s push for the forward-looking infrastructure plan and the relaxing of investment regulations.    [FULL  STORY]

Manufacturing’s investments dip

COMPARISON BASE: Investment in fixed assets by companies last quarter was affected by a company’s substantial equipment purchases last year, the Department of Statistics said

By: Lauly Li  /  Staff reporter

The manufacturing sector’s fixed-asset investments plunged 18 percent year-on-year to NT$233 billion (US$7.76 billion) last quarter, the first annual contraction in eight quarters and the lowest investment level in the past five quarters, the Ministry of Economic Affairs said yesterday.

The growth momentum of fixed-asset investments decelerated in the second quarter this year, only expanding 1 percent annually compared with 17 percent year-on-year growth in the first quarter of this year, the Department of Statistics said.

“Last quarter’s decline was mainly due to the comparison base being lifted by the substantial production expansion plans of a local semiconductor company the previous year,” department Deputy Director-General Wang Shu-chuan (王淑娟) said by telephone.

The equipment that the company purchased last year became operational in the first quarter, so the company slowed its equipment purchases in the second and third quarters, which consequently had a drag on the fixed-asset investments of the overall sector, she said.    [FULL  STORY]

power projects. That’s out of a total of 22 projects which were submitted for environmental assessment in 2017.

Wind power is an important component in the government’s efforts to phase out nuclear energy. EPA Minister Lee Ying-yuan told a press conference on Monday that projected output will far surpass the country’s wind power goals for the year 2025.

“Environmental assessments have passed for projects that will have a total output of 10.68 GW, which is more than two times our goal. This shows that in our efforts to develop green energy, and offshore wind power in particular, we have overcome a lot of obstacles. This includes those posed by the conservation of the Chinese white dolphins,” said Lee.    [FULL  STORY]

of people’s attention was said to be “very unusual” by a BBC reporter.

In the radio show “BBC Business Matters” broadcast on Wednesday, BBC reporter Cindy Su expressed her dire concern over the conditions of migrant workers in Taiwan, but a direct hiring move by a leading Taiwanese food manufacturer has won recognition as a new trend to start out.

In her report, she said the company I-Mei Foods did something “unusual” in terms of recruitment and has actively responded to the problems facing migrant workers by taking the first step – cutting out the middlemen in the process of hiring.

She continued to say that the company went to the Philippines, to the southern city of Davao and the capital Manila recently to interview hundreds of job applicants, migrant workers mainly, to fill 200 positions in Taiwan in their factories.    [FULL  STORY]
