During a stroke, a patient loses an estimated 1.9 million brain cells every minute, so interpreting their CT scan even one second quicker is vital to maintaining their health.

To save precious time, Taiwan-based medical imaging startup Deep01 has created an AI-based medical imaging software, called DeepCT, to evaluate acute intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH), a type of stroke. The system works with 95 percent accuracy in just 30 seconds per case — about 10 times faster than competing methods.

Founded in 2016, Deep01 is the first AI company in Asia to have FDA clearances in both the U.S. and Taiwan. It’s a member of NVIDIA Inception, a program that helps startups develop, prototype and deploy their AI or data science technology and get to market faster.

The startup recently raised around $3 million for DeepCT, which detects suspected areas of bleeding around the brain and annotates where they’re located on CT scans, notifying physicians of the results.    [FULL  STORY]

Taipei, Aug. 5 (CNA) Innolux Corp., one of the largest flat panel makers in Taiwan, reported a smaller net loss for the second quarter because of stronger shipments to meet demand for remote work and online learning devices amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

In a statement Tuesday, Innolux reported a net loss of NT$4.8 billion (US$163 million) for the quarter, down from NT$5.3 billion in the first quarter. The smaller loss was helped by a 32.7 percent increase in consolidated sales from a quarter earlier to NT$66.9 billion.

The company's loss per share stood at NT$0.49, compared with from NT$0.55 in loss in the first quarter, the statement said.

Helped by rebounding screen prices and cost control measures, the company's gross margin — the difference between revenue and cost of goods sold — improved to 2.8 percent in the second quarter from minus 1.8 percent in the first quarter.    [FULL  STORY]

Vanguard International Semiconductor Co (世界先進), which makes power management ICs and driver ICs for displays, yesterday said that it would raise capital spending by about 35 percent for this year to boost 8-inch wafer capacity amid strong customer demand.

For the whole of this year, Vanguard plans to spend NT$3.5 billion (US$118.62 million) on new equipment and facilities, up from a capital spending budget of NT$2.6 billion disclosed in February.

The additional spending would be mostly for its newly acquired fab in Singapore, as Vanguard plans to invest a total of NT$1.9 billion this year and next year to increase the fab’s capacity to 40,000 8-inch wafers a month in the first half of next year, up from 30,000 wafers currently.

The Singaporean fab has a maximum production capacity of 60,000 wafers a month, Vanguard said.    [FULL  STORY]

Singapore-based Hong Leong Hotel Development Ltd (豐隆大飯店股份) yesterday said it has extended a management contract to ensure the continued presence of the Grand Hyatt brand in Taipei, ending rumors that the two sides were parting ways.

“We are pleased Hyatt is able to come to terms on the extension of the management contract of Grand Hyatt Taipei,” said Kwek Leng Beng (郭令明), executive chairman of City Developments Ltd (城市發展) and Millennium & Copthorne Hotels Ltd (千禧國敦酒店).

Hong Leong Hotel Development is a subsidiary of Millennium, and both fall under the Hong Leong Group (豐隆集團).
