highest monthly level in the country’s banking history, the Financial Supervisory Commission (FSC) said on Thursday.

Credit card holders in Taiwan spent NT$220.3 billion (US$7.3 billion) in March, up NT$35.3 billion from the previous month, said the FSC, the top financial regulator in the country.

The March figure was the third highest in Taiwan’s banking history, after NT$263.5 billion recorded in June 2016 and NT$242.5 billion in June 2015.

Chuang Shiu-yuan (莊琇媛), deputy director of the FSC’s Banking Bureau, attributed the increase in credit spending in March to an aggressive campaign to encourage electronic payments and the greater use of mobile payments.    [FULL  STORY]

Telecoms hopeful competition will ease

PRICING:Taiwan Mobile and Far EasTone expect flat rates for unlimited 4G data plans to increase later this year, as telecom operators struggle to stay profitable

Taiwan Mobile Co (台灣大哥大) expects pricing competition to ease in the fourth quarter of this year as low-rate plans for unlimited 4G data transmission have significantly cut into the profits of telecom operators, a company executive said yesterday.

Telecom operators are struggling to stay profitable as stiff competition has delayed the exit of NT$699 per month unlimited 4G data plans, as well as the scrapping of flat data transmission rates as a whole.

“Lower [flat] rates have affected the company’s ARPU [average revenue per user], but I believe the rationalization of competition should start to happen three quarters” later, Taiwan Mobile president James Jeng (鄭俊卿) told investors in a teleconference.

“In my personal view, the three big ones [telecoms] are facing pressure in terms of profitability … although the fixed data rates will not change in the short term,” Jeng said, referring to the company, Chunghwa Telecom Co (中華電信) and Far EasTone Telecommunications Co (遠傳電信).    [FULL  STORY]

TAIPEI (Taiwan News)–Shipment volume of the Taiwanese smartphone industry

Taiwan’s overall smartphone shipments will likely to see a boost this year, according to MIC.

totaled around 74.7 million units, declining 13.2 percent year over year in the first quarter of 2017, according to MIC (Market Intelligence& Consulting Institute), a Taipei-based IT research institute.

“Since Android phones’ launching often takes place in the first half of the year, the shipment volume is estimated to increase at around 79.7 million units in the second quarter of 2017, up 6.7 percent sequentially,” says Aaron Lin, industry analyst with MIC. “The drop in the first quarter was mainly because iPhone 7 market sales did not live up to expectations, which led to Apple’s decision to revise its orders down.”

“Nevertheless, as FIH Mobile starts to produce Nokia phones for HMD Global in 2017, Foxconn to produce Xiaomi Redmi smartphones in its India new manufacture unit, and Wistron to manufacture iPhone SE in the production line of its Indian fully owned subsidiary ICT Service Management Solutions, Taiwan’s overall smartphone shipments will likely to see a boost this year.”    [FULL  STORY]

Groups oppose Company Act proposal

INFORMATION SECURITY:The Taipei Bar Association said disclosing shareholder lists is unlikely to protect shareholders’ interests — and might actually harm them

Representatives of business groups, lawyers, accountants and bookkeepers’ unions yesterday opposed the Ministry of Economic Affair’s proposed amendment to the Company Act (公司法) at a public hearing in Taipei, citing concerns over increased operating costs and inconvenience to small and medium-sized enterprises (SME).

The Chinese National Federation of Industries (CNFI, 全國工業總會) and the Chinese National Association of Industry and Commerce, Taiwan (CNAIC, 工商協進會) said they are worried about the proposed amendment, as it demands that non-publicly listed companies upload sensitive information, such as a full list of shareholders and financial statements, to an online platform.

“If an SME is not listed on the Taiwan Stock Exchange or the Taipei Exchange, it is not obliged to disclose that information. This simply adds an unnecessary burden to SMEs,” CNFI representative Wang hui-ling (王慧玲) told the hearing, which was convened by the ministry.

The Taipei Bar Association (台北市律師公會) said it does not think disclosing shareholder lists would protect shareholders’ interests.    [FULL  STORY]

Manufacturing still expanding

SEASONALITY:Traditionally, the first half is the low sales season for tech products, but inventory build-up now takes place six months ahead of new product launches

The nation’s official manufacturing purchasing managers’ index (PMI) fell to 61.0 last month, easing from 65.2 in March, as local manufacturers reported improved business, although the pace was tempered, the Chung-Hua Institution for Economic Research (CIER, 中華經濟研究院) said yesterday.

“The latest figure suggests continued expansion across the manufacturing sector except textiles and food product suppliers, thanks to strong demand for electronics and optical devices,” CIER president Wu Chung-shu (吳中書) told a news conference.

Despite the slowdown, the PMI stayed comfortably above the neutral mark of 50 as local firms started to benefit from inventory build-up for next-generation electronic gadgets, Wu said.

PMI data aim to capture the health of the manufacturing industry, with scores above 50 indicating expansion and those below suggesting contraction.    [FULL  STORY]
