TAIPEI, Taiwan — The internet is indulging in egg puns as Niantic Inc., the Pokemon Company, welcomes the arrival of Easter with a new Pokemon Go event that is all about eggs — the “Eggstravaganza.”
The event began in Taiwan on Friday at 4:00 a.m., allowing trainers to find a greater variety of Pokemon from 2-kilometer Eggs and earn more Candy for every Pokemon hatched from an Egg.

“Your Egg-venture doesn’t stop there,” said the San Francisco-based app developer. Players will also level up faster and gain double XP for every action they take, while Eggs will also be 50 percent off in the in-game shop — this means players can earn a whopping four times the XP they normally would when using a Lucky Egg.

The labor ministry says it has no plans to revise the Labor Standards

No plans to revise Labor Standards Act: Lin (CNA photo)

Act in June. That’s the word from Deputy Labor Minister Lin San-quei on Friday. Lin was speaking with representatives of business and industrial groups.

An amendment to the 1984 Labor Standards Act went into effect in December and has received a mixed response. The amendment is aimed at protecting labor rights by giving employees more overtime pay, longer vacations and two days off a week. However, the government has come under fire from employers and workers as well. That’s because some rules are hard to carry out and do not necessarily benefit staff.

Lin defended the government’s policy by saying that the labor ministry will give the public a clearer understanding of the amendment.    [FULL  STORY]

Taipei, April 14 (CNA) A U.S.-based brokerage has raised its target price for shares of Taiwanese smartphone camera lens supplier Largan Precision Co. (大立光) to NT$6,060 (US$199), the highest level among the foreign securities houses that track the stock, after the manufacturer reported a new gross margin high for the first quarter of this year.

In a research note released on Friday, the U.S. brokerage said it expects Largan shares to challenge NT$6,060, an upgrade from an earlier estimate of NT$6,000, on the back of a higher-than- expected gross margin of 70.9 percent for the January-March period.

In an investor conference held a day earlier, Largan said that the first quarter’s gross margin — the difference between revenue and cost of goods sold — improved from the previous quarter’s 70.72 percent.    [FULL  STORY]

EVA Airways Corp (長榮航空) yesterday gave an upbeat outlook for this year and said that the company is counting on rising passenger numbers to offset declining unit revenue as intensifying competition drives down ticket prices.

The company has set its sights on increasing its revenue passenger kilometers (RPK) by 20 percent this year by adding more flights to European and North American destinations, as well as key cities in China, EVA corporate planning division executive vice president Albert Liao (廖至維) said at the company’s first earnings conference in its 28-year history.

However, Liao said that some flights and destinations in China would be cut this year and redirected to other Asian destinations as uncertainties in cross-strait relations continue to affect sales.

He added that sales from flights to China registered their first decline last year.

Although unit revenue last year fell 9.8 percent annually to NT$2.1 from NT$2.3 the previous year, total passenger revenue posted a 4.7 percent year-on-year gain to NT$85.75 billion (US$2.82 billion) as RPK rose 17.2 percent year-on-year to 51.17 billion, Liao said.    [FULL  STORY]

Previously, the company would directly manage and assign independent drivers to pick up passengers at designated locations, but under the new model in Taiwan management of drivers will be handed over to partnering local rental car businesses or taxi franchises.

EXPANSION:The camera lens manufacturer is counting on a new plant that will start running later this year to boost production, but employee recruitment is critical, it said

Largan Precision Co (大立光), the world’s leading camera lens supplier for handsets, yesterday reported a record-high gross margin of 70.94 percent for the first quarter, driven by continued yields improvement, which helped offset the impact of a slow season and a stronger currency.

The figure outpaced last quarter’s peak season margin of 70.66 percent and was 11.7 percentage points higher from the same period a year earlier.

“The New Taiwan dollar’s appreciation and our product mix were negative factors, but better yields helped the company sustain its gross margin,” special assistant Josephine Huang (黃印嘉) told a teleconference.    [FULL  STORY]

chipmaker, said Thursday it was still location-hunting for its NT$500 billion 3-nanometer (nm) chip fab.

At a shareholder meeting, TSMC Co-CEO C.C. Wei (魏哲家) said the company was still considering all possibilities but added that setting up the fab in the U.S. was “still not a very optimal option.”

Wei was addressing news reports that the company had been considering building its most advanced plant yet in the U.S. rather than in Taiwan — a rumor that sent government officials scrambling for verification.

Technology Minister Chen Liang-gee (陳良基) later denied the report, saying TSMC management told him there were no plans to build the plant in the U.S.   [FULL  STORY]
