MediaTek is one of few chip designers that would see its revenue grow by a double-digit percentage from a year earlier, TrendForce said.

The company’s revenue is to expand to US$8.9 billion this year, compared with U$7.59 billion last year, retaining its position as the world’s third-biggest chip designer, the Taipei-based market researcher said.

The Hsinchu-based company has a long list of Chinese clients, including Oppo Mobile Telecommunications Corp (歐珀移動) and Vivo Electronics Corp (維沃移動通信).    [FULL  STORY]

U.S. President-elect Donald Trump on Sunday, saying billionaire real estate mogul Trump benefited from U.S. President Ronald Reagan’s economic policy in the 1980s and became a true follower of Reaganomics.

Hsieh Chin-ho (謝金河), chairman of Investment Media and Wealth Magazine, offered his take on why Trump took a historic call from President Tsai Ing-wen on Friday and the possible impact of that 10-minute phone talk.

China was initially relieved – and even happy – that Trump won the U.S. presidential election, believing he would be “easier to deal with” than Hillary Clinton, Hsieh said in a Facebook post. Beijing remains highly uncertain as to what Trump’s policies will be, he added.    [FULL  STORY]

Nan Ya Plastics dismisses impact of Brazil PET tariff

UNFAZED:Brazilian authorities ruled two Taiwanese firms sold PET resins at unfairly low prices in the Latin American country and imposed an anti-dumping tariff

Nan Ya Plastics Corp (南亞塑膠) yesterday said an anti-dumping penalty tariff imposed by Brazil over the company’s polyethylene terephthalate (PET) resin does not pose any impact on the company’s financial condition or its operations.

The company said in a Taiwan Stock Exchange filing that PET resin is among several items produced by the company, but it is produced in very small amounts compared with other products, accounting for merely 0.08 percent of its overall shipments to Brazil in 2014.

PET resin is a raw material commonly used to produce soda, juice and cooking oil containers. The material is also used for a wide range of other products, such as audio and video disks and cinematic film stock.

The company’s remarks came after Brazilian authorities last month ruled Nan Ya and another Taiwanese chemical firm, Lealea Enterprise Co (力麗化纖), sold PET resins at unfairly low prices in the Latin American country, which would subject them to an anti-dumping tariff of 52.1 percent, a level which had been stated in a preliminary ruling by Brazil’s Council of Chamber of External Commerce (CAMEX).    [FULL  STORY]

Housing transactions in 2016 could hit new low: analysts

Taipei, Dec. 3 (CNA) Transactions involving residential and commercial properties in Taiwan could fall 201612030014t0001to a new low in 2016 as buying interest, particularly in northern Taiwan, remains weak, analysts said on Saturday.

Transactions of homes, shops and offices in 2016 are likely to reach only 250,000 units or lower, compared with 292,550 units in 2015, analysts said.

In the first 10 months of this year, transactions of residential and commercial housing totaled 197,201 units, according to statistics released by the Ministry of the Interior. Although the fourth quarter is a traditional peak season for the property market, it is still unlikely to offset the impact of the slowdown in the previous three quarters and transactions for the whole year are unlikely to bounce back, analysts said.

Tseng Ching-der (曾敬德), a research manager with Sinyi Realty Inc. (信義房屋) is downbeat about the local property market for this year based on existing sales records nationwide and especially those for the six major cities, which serve as an indicator to the Taiwan property market as a whole.    [FULL  STORY]
