local market, because the supply is limited, a local retailer said.

The Apple Watch went on sale at 11am Friday at 10 select Apple-authorized resellers in Taipei, New Taipei, Taichung and Kaohsiung, but the total number of initially available units was estimated at only 1,000.

A sales representative of Data Express Infotech Company, one of Apple’s main distributors in Taiwan, said the first batch may sell out on the launch day due to the limited supply.

A consumer surnamed Wang, 30, who was the first buyer of an Apple Watch at a Data Express store, said she began to queue up at 10pm Thursday.

Wang said she thinks most Taiwanese consumers are still uncertain about whether they really need the Apple Watch, while others have purchased it from other markets.     [FULL  STORY]

Economy shows signs of pickup: NDC

SLUGGISH:Only two of the monitoring system’s nine business gauges — M1B and machinery and electrical equipment imports — picked up, while the rest declined

The economy remained sluggish last month, but showed signs of a pickup, with machinery and electrical equipment imports improving, the National Development Council (NDC) said yesterday.

The government’s business monitoring system rose by 2 points to 18 last month, moving into the “yellow-blue” zone, from “blue” in April, a sign that Taiwan’s export-oriented economy is shifting gears, hopefully back to the course of a modest recovery with the advent of the high sales season for local manufacturers, the council said in a statement.

April’s “blue” reading had raised concern over an economic downturn after the global recovery proved weaker than expected in the first quarter.     [FULL  STORY]

Taipei, June 25 (CNA) Local enterprises’ outlook toward the domestic manufacturing 201506250027t0001sector improved slightly in May, according to a monthly report released Thursday by the Taiwan Institute of Economic Research (TIER, 台灣經濟研究院).

The TIER, one of Taiwan’s leading think tanks, said that although electronics exports remained overshadowed by weakening global demand, outbound sales in machinery, textiles, optoelectronics and auto parts stabilized in the month, which helped the slightly increased optimism.

Based on the institute’s monthly survey of business sentiment in Taiwan, its manufacturing composite index rose 0.13 points from a month earlier to 96.42 in May, breaking a three-month losing streak.     [FULL STORY]

According to statistics compiled by the bureau’s northern area division, TSMC, the world’s largest contract chip maker, paid more than NT$20 billion (US$645 million) in corporate income tax in 2014, the most of any enterprise operating in northern Taiwan.

In 2014, TSMC posted a net profit of NT$302.1 billion (US$9.76 billion), up 40.2% from a year earlier and the highest in the company’s history, because of strong global demand for mobile devices.

NO PRESSURE:The central bank governor said that growth momentum in the nation would pick up in the second half of the year, making monetary stimulus unnecessary

The central bank yesterday stood firm on its loose monetary policy stance for the 16th consecutive quarter — its longest streak without change — as the absence of inflationary pressure allows it room to help support the nation’s small and fragile economic growth.

Central bank Governor Perng Fai-nan (彭淮南) shrugged off a need for lower interest rates or a weaker currency, saying borrowing costs are cheap enough locally and that the New Taiwan dollar is more competitive than the won.

Perng made the remarks after the bank’s quarterly board meeting, in which it decided to keep the rediscount rate unchanged at 1.875 percent, the collateralized loan rate at 2.25 percent and the unsecured loan rate at 4.125 percent.     [FULL  STORY]
