Taipei, Dec. 14 (CNA) Taiwan's central bank is expected to announce no change in its key interest rates for the 14th consecutive quarter in an upcoming quarterly policymaking meeting scheduled for Dec. 19, on the back of sound economic fundamentals and mild inflationary pressure, economists said Saturday.

If the forecasts are accurate, the central bank's discount rate will remain at 1.375 percent, rates on accommodations with collateral at 1.750 percent and accommodations without collateral at 3.625 percent.

Such a decision by the local central bank will come after the U.S. Federal Reserve concluded a policymaking meeting on Wednesday, the last meeting this year, at which it left its key interest rates unchanged following three rate cuts earlier this year.

The Fed's policymaking meeting was closely watched by central banks around the world.

The history of growing coffee trees in indigenous areas of Pingtung can be traced back to the period of Japanese rule. It was in 1902 when the visiting government founded the Hengchun Tropical Botanical Gardens (today’s Hengchun Research Center of the Taiwan Forestry Research Institute) and started experimenting with growing coffee. The very first coffee tree in Taiwan was thus planted in Pingtung, after which cultivation continued to spread to other regions in Taiwan up until 1929.

Recent years, there have been shops combining high quality coffee beans with well-preserved buildings, creating an inviting atmosphere and relaxing space with the aroma of freshly brewed beverages for visitors to enjoy. Next time when you’re in Pingtung, make sure you don’t miss out on the opportunity to sip on a delicious cup of locally brewed coffee!

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A Hi-Life convenience store in the Dihua business circle in Taipei has an ATM that can carry out foreign currency exchange services, accepting foreign banknotes such as US dollars, Japanese yen, and Renminbi in exchange for New Taiwan dollar (NTD) banknotes.

The machine can also change NT dollars into USD, RMB, and JPY, according to a statement from the country's third-largest convenience store chain.

To tap into the growing tourist market, Hi-Life is rolling out the foreign currency exchange service at the store, in collaboration with Shin Kong Commercial Bank. Taipei, Dec. 11 (CNA) GlobalWafers Co., a leading silicon wafer supplier in Taiwan, has decided to repatriate US$350 million for investments, taking advantage of a preferential tax status created by a newly passed law that encourages local firms to repatriate retained earnings.

In a statement released Tuesday, GlobalWafers said the plan for fund repatriation has been approved by its board of directors and is scheduled to be completed in the first half of next year.

GlobalWafers is among the major local enterprises with a worldwide production network that have responded to government incentives to invest back home in a bid to boost local industrial development and eventually the domestic economy.

The new law, which went into effect Aug. 15, allows retained earnings to return and be taxed at a lower preferential tax rate rather than at the standard corporate income tax rate.    [FULL  STORY]

Trade uncertainty could slow growth

CLOUDY OUTLOOK: The US-China trade dispute and a global economic slowdown could dampen demand for major consumer products, a Taiwan Ratings analyst said

Taipei Times

By: Crystal Hsu  /  Staff reporter

The nation’s economy could lose some of its strength next year because of global trade protectionism, with GDP growth forecast to slow to 2.4 percent from an estimated 2.5 percent this year, as trade tensions and a global slowdown hurt demand for consumer products, S&P Global Ratings said yesterday.

“Uncertainty remains high as we head into 2020,” Taiwan Ratings (中華信評), the international agency’s local arm, told a media briefing in Taipei.

The economic slowdown globally and in China, coupled with an uncertain trade outlook, could hamper demand for major consumer products, from smartphones to home appliances and automobiles, Taiwan Ratings analyst David Hsu (許立德) said.

The scenario would weigh on the earnings ability of local companies in the semiconductor, electronic components, chemicals and auto parts industries — the mainstay of Taiwan’s exports — and limit any meaningful improvement in the nation’s economy over the next 12 months, Hsu said.
