Among the participants were Wei Kuo-yen, head of the Environmental Protection Administration, American Institute in Taiwan director Kin Moy, and New Taipei deputy mayor Chen Shen-hsien.

Chen said the municipality has around 120 kilometers of coastline and he urged concerted efforts to help make it beautiful and clean.
Moy noted that this was the third year AIT has taken part in the beach cleanup, saying that environmental protection is an issue in which every nationality, age and region should do its share.     [FULL  STORY]

Taipower to help build Penghu into low-carbon county

Taipei, Oct. 1 (CNA) In line with a government policy on the development of outlying 15603643Penghu County into a low-carbon tourism destination, state-run Taiwan Power Company (Taipower) has announced that it will build 11 new wind turbines at three different locations in the island county.

The 11 planned turbines, six of which will be located in Longmen (龍門) village of Huxi Township (湖西), two in Jiangmei (講美) village and three in Chikan (赤崁) village, both in Baisha Township (白沙), will have a total installed generating capacity of 33,000 kilowatts after construction is completed. They are expected to lead to a reduction of 62,310 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions per year, according to Taipower.

The company will hold environmental impact assessment meetings at community centers in Chikan, Jiangmei, and Longmen villages Oct. 1-2 to explain to local residents the details of the construction projects, such as current local environmental conditions and measures to be taken on environmental protection. In the upcoming UNFCCC climate change conference in Paris, Taiwan will attend as a non-governmental organization and aim to gain more support internationally. For the very first time, Wei Kuo-yen, the incumbent minister of Environmental Protection Administration, was welcomed to present a speech at the seminar in the German Bundestag on September 9.

Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Germany invited Wei to present a speech at the Climate Change Policy in Taiwan seminar, which made Wei the first minister to present a speech at the German Bundestag. Many politicians attended the seminar, including Chairman of the German-Taiwanese Parliamentary Friendship Group of the German Bundestag Klaus-Peter Willsch, the vice president of the World League for Freedom and Democracy of Germany Olav Gutting, a member of Committee on the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety Dr. Thomas Gebhart, a member of the German Bundestag, Hans-Joachim Barchmann and 20 other government officials.     [FULL  STORY]
