‘Taiwan is a province of China,’ reads one rule. ‘But taking the feelings of our Taiwan compatriots into account, now we generally don’t call it “Taiwan Province,” and more often use “Taiwan Region” or “Taiwan.”‘

Chinese state news agency Xinhua last week updated their style guide which raised the number of banned Taiwan-related terms.

Originally published in May 2015, the new guide which was released on July 19, supplemented 57 new rules to its original 102. Before the update, there were only four rules on Taiwan-related terms. There are now 38 rules that Chinese media must adhere to when referring to Taiwan, most notably banning the use of “Republic of China,” the official title of Taiwan.    [FULL  STORY]

The list had originally circulated via email among English teachers who would add to it and post it in staff rooms for laughs during the 1990s. The Facebook user, who has been a resident of Taiwan for nearly twenty years, had not modified it since the 2000 version, so there are some aspects that may need updating to include the advent of social media and smartphones. Nevertheless, most of these points will probably still resonate with many foreigners that have lived in Taiwan for several years.    [FULL  STORY]

Taoyuan City Government’s leniency in dealing with the pollution from processing firm Yu Hung Technology (宇鴻科技) in nearby farms, which cover 122 hectares downstream of the now-defunct Shenmai Pond (滲眉埤).

The Council of Agriculture on Wednesday rejected a report by Chinese-language Next Magazine that said rice is once again being grown on farmland that was once irrigated by the former pond, an area where farming is prohibited.

The area spans about 97 hectares and could have provided 20 tonnes of contaminated rice, the report said.

The council said that the farms cited by the magazine had not been irrigated with water from the former pond, but by water from a different source, adding that land on which farming is banned is checked every two months.    [FULL  STORY]

Trump’s big Hon Hai deal: 5 things you need to know

The China Post
Date: July 27, 2017
By: The China Post

TAIPEI, Taiwan — U.S. President Donald Trump and Hon Hai chief Terry Gou announced Wednesday that the Taiwanese tech giant would build a massive new display plant in Wisconsin. Here are five things to know about the deal:

1. The factory is big in a lot of ways
Trump promised during his campaign to bring the manufacturing bases of companies like Apple to the U.S. This is almost like that — Hon Hai is a key part of the Apple supply chain, but this factory will make parts for non-Apple products — but it is still a symbolic victory.

But it’s even more of a victory in real terms. Here it is in sheer numbers:

• The total investment is worth US$10 billion over four years (the plant should open in 2020)
• Initially employing 3,000 people, the plant is estimated to ultimately create as many as 13,000 jobs
• Up to 150 supply firms supporting the plant will set up shop in the same area
• It’s estimated the facility will create 22,000 more indirect jobs and another 10,000 construction jobs
According to Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker, the average salaries of the 13,000 factory jobs will be US$53,000 a year, plus benefits
• The factory will cover 1.86 million square meters
