TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Tainan City Mayor William Lai said Saturday he would not attend

the Double Ten National Day celebrations in Taipei next week, reports said Saturday.

The move follows the Democratic Progressive Party politician’s emphasis on his support for Taiwan Independence earlier in the week, leading commentators to speculate whether he is trying to distance himself from presidential candidate Tsai Ing-wen’s advocacy of the status quo.

Later Saturday, Lai defended himself by saying he had overseen several Double Ten celebrations in Tainan City and that Taiwan was already independent under the name of Republic of China.

It was Kuomintang presidential candidate Hung Hsiu-chu who said Tsai should invite Lai along to the October 10 National Day events. It will be the first time in many years that the DPP leader will actually attend, though critics have said her move is inspired by the need to project a moderate image in the race for the January 16 presidential and legislative elections.     [FULL  STORY]

Taipei, Oct. 3 (CNA) People in Taiwan would have been able to see the International 25869306Space Station (ISS) with the naked eye as it passed over Taiwan early Saturday evening, the Taipei Astronomical Museum said on its Facebook page.

The museum said people would have been able to see the space station, in orbit 400 kilometers above the earth, as it passed over Taiwan between 6:14 p.m. and 6:23 p.m.

The station’s brightness would have been only next to the moon, and people would have been able to see it with the naked eye in good conditions.

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) of the United States provides a “Spot the Station” service. Interested parties can register on the website and will then receive e-mails or text messages on their mobile phones to inform them of when the ISS will pass above their locations.     [FULL  STORY]

ban on pork imported from the United States containing traces of leanness-enhancing drug ractopamine, amid fears that the issue could affect future bilateral trade talks.

Taiwan and the US held trade discussions under the bilateral Trade and Investment Framework Agreement (TIFA) on Thursday, and while the issue of US pork imports was not on the agenda, Washington has hinted that it would make signing a bilateral investment agreement more difficult.

The US suspended TIFA talks from 2007 to 2012 because of Taiwan’s refusal to import beef containing traces of ractopamine. They were restarted after Taiwan agreed to lift the ban, but local authorities are much less likely to give in on pork imports.

COA chief Chen Bao-ji said imports of US beef and pork must be considered separately, especially considering that no nations that consume more than 30 kilograms of pork per person per year have allowed ractopamine-laced park to enter their markets.     [FULL  STORY]

demanded a provisional party congress be held to review whether the party’s presidential candidate, Hung Shiu-chu (洪秀柱), should be replaced, dealing a severe blow to Hung’s campaign and further fueling rumors of division within the party over Hung’s candidacy.

KMT sources were yesterday cited by a TVBS report as saying that the most recent poll conducted by the KMT indicated that Democratic Progressive Party presidential candidate Tsai Ing-wen’s (蔡英文) approval rating had soared to a record level of 45 percent, while Hung’s rating had plummeted to 13 percent.

Anonymous party members said Hung’s support rating was critically low and might severely damage the KMT’s standing in next year’s legislative elections.

Chiang yesterday said he planned to propose that the party hold a provisional party congress at a Central Standing Committee meeting on Wednesday.     [FULL  STORY]

Based on official data that the population of people aged 18 or older was 19 million this year, that meant some 3.3 million people were unhappy.

Among the unhappy locals, nearly 50 percent showed obvious signs of depression, with some requiring professional assistance, said Yeh Ya-hsing (葉雅馨), head of the mental health section of John Tung Foundation, on Friday as she publicized the survey’s findings.

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Health inspectors in Kaohsiung concluded that bleach had been

added to noodle products by at least two food companies, reports said Friday.

During tests of various products made by Ta Liang Agricultural Produce Co. of Daliao, Kaohsiung City, sulfure dioxide levels of 0.048 gram per kilo turned up, while the legal maximum stands at 0.01 g per kg, reports said.

The Kaohsiung health department alerted local prosecutors, who visited two suppliers of Ta Liang, named by the media as Tsai Poh and Yi Tsai, on Thursday. The raids turned up large quantities of noodles treated with bleach, and the top managers of both companies admitted the scams, reports said. They were freed on bail of NT$200,000 (US$6,000) and NT$100,000 (US$3,000) respectively.

Ta Liang had sold different types of noodles containing excessive levels of preservatives and bleach to more than 300 businesses across Kaohsiung, Tainan and Pingtung, prosecutors said. The customers included noodle wholesalers, shops, fastfood stores and noodle stalls, but detainees at local prisons had also had the products served to them, according to media reports.     [FULL  STORY]

at the end of September. The US, Russia, and China remain in the top three while Japan climbed to No. 4 from No. 9, with India sitting at the fifth spot, reports our Chinese-language sister newspaper Want Daily.

said that the Republic of China (ROC) Constitution calls for “ultimate unification with China,” following Tainan Mayor William Lai’s (賴清德) comment on Wednesday that he supports Taiwanese independence.

The Constitution mandates unification with China, Hung said, adding that the “Guidelines for National Unification” — which had been the nation’s main guiding policy on cross-strait affairs until then-president Chen Shui-bian (陳水扁) in 2006 declared that they “ceased to apply” — have short, medium and long-term goals.

“At the end of the road, it is unification, be it in 50 years or 100 years,” Hung said.

“However, it should be our initiative to unify [China], rather than being annexed by someone else,” the deputy legislative speaker said.     [FULL  STORY]
