fever cases nationwide hit 277 on Saturday, of which 214 came from Kaohsiung alone, reports said Sunday.

The outbreak in Taiwan’s southern port city is still in its peak as daily cases of the mosquito-borne disease have failed to show signs of relenting, the CDC said.

Compared to Kaohsiung, the situation in neighboring Tainan appears to be improving, it said.

As of Saturday, Tainan had reported 56 new cases, but that was 35 fewer than the figure it reported on the same day last week.

The number of accumulated confirmed cases there now stands at 21,744, out of a total of 29,329 cases nationwide, CDC data showed.

However, the endemic continues unabated in neighboring Kaohsiung city, where it showed an increase of 30 cases from the same day last Saturday.     [FULL  STORY]

and pregnant women who may have been exposed to lead from water pipes that were installed decades ago, the city’s Department of Health said Sunday.

Those affected are entitled to seek tests in the four designated Public Health Centers in Sanchong, Zhonghe, Yonghe, and Xindian, where there are estimated 10,066 households still fed water through small-diameter lead pipes, reports said.

Besides Taipei City, the Taipei Water Department currently serves water to the districts of Zhonghe, Yonghe, Xindian, and Sanchong in New Taipei, and to part of Xizhi District.

Health authorities are also looking for support from the city government to allow residents in the greater Taipei area to seek tests in six Taipei City Hospitals.    [FULL  STORY]

than 100 people have died despite the efforts of a robust healthcare system, putting Taiwan on a level with poorer Asian countries that grapple every year with the mosquito-borne disease.

Dengue fever has touched nearly every part of Asia and regularly threatens about 1.8 billion people in the region. Subtropical Taiwan always gets a few cases, but this year the western Pacific island is fighting its biggest outbreak ever, with more than 23,000 sick people as of mid-October.

Dengue fever cases spiked this year from the annual average of 1,000 to 2,000 because of high heat and the Taiwanese habit of collecting fresh water – that quickly breeds mosquitoes as it stands. Lin Sheng-che, health department director in Tainan, the Taiwanese city with the most dengue fever cases this year, points to standing water as the chief aggravator.

He said one source of standing water are water vessels people often have outdoors, such as scoop basins and water bowls for their dogs, and that those are being taken back in. He suggested people look around their home for any such containers and dump out the water as soon as possible.     [FULL  STORY]

Through the website, which was launched Thursday night, city water users can enter the account number on their water bill in the spaces provided to check if their water is exposed to the lead water pipes.

The special Web page, in Chinese only, can be accessed at: http://www.water.gov.taipei/ct.asp?xItem=127401280&CtNode=85025&mp=114001

Taipei water customers can also call the water department’s hotline at 8733-5678 or e-mail call@water.gov.taipei for further information.     [FULL  STORY]
