China considers self-ruled and democratic Taiwan to be its sacred territory and has never renounced the use of force to bring what it views as a wayward province under Chinese control.

China has taken an increasingly hostile stance towards Taiwan since Tsai Ing-wen from the island’s pro-independence Democratic Progressive Party won presidential elections last year.    [FULL  STORY]

The Legislature on Tuesday passed an amendment to relax regulations for the appointment of diplomats. In the future, the percentage of using non-civil servants as diplomats will be raised from 10% to 15%.

Ruling Democratic Progressive Party legislator Tuan Yi-kang said former president Ma Ying-jeou had attempted to make changes to the way Taiwan’s diplomats are appointed. However, the issue failed to make progress due to disputes over wording.

The amendment aims to advance Taiwan’s diplomacy and increase the country’s opportunities for joining international organizations. Ambassadors and permanent representatives must be familiar with the background of the country they are assigned to and have relevant experience.    [FULL  STORY]
