death seeker and this is the case of a man who jumped to his death in central Taiwan’s Nantou County in 2016.

According to the written judgment of Taiwan High Court’s Taichung Branch Court, in April, 2016, a man surnamed Lin went up to the roof of the seven-floor building where he lived ,crossed a short wall to the roof of a next building, jumped off the building, and crushed a female vendor surnamed Chen selling vegetables on the roadside, killing both himself and the woman. On Tuesday Taiwan’s Supreme Court affirmed the high court’s verdict that Lin’s family should pay NT$5.2 million (about US$173,000) damages to Chen’s family.

Chen’s husband and five children collectively filed a civil lawsuit against Lin’s wife and her three children, seeking an award of damages. Chen’s widower told the court that he was married to his wife for 50 years and took her to the same location to sell vegetables every day. The loss of his wife also meant the loss of the mother for his five children, who were very saddened by their mother’s sudden departure, Chen’s widower said, adding that they were seeking NT$6.5 million in damages, the court judgment said.    [FULL  STORY]

Yuan Tuesday, urging the government to protect the right of migrant workers to change employers and to revise regulations that they say punish migrant workers for their employers’ faults.

Tien Kei-fung (田奇峯), a member of the Serve the People Association, which organized the protest, said his association has handled cases over the years in which migrant workers have been unable to extend their stay in Taiwan to look for work due to false information provided by their former employers.

Some employers, when they want to suspend a contract with a migrant worker for no good reason, will falsely write “business contraction” as a reason on the official form that needs to be filled out so that migrant workers can change employers, he said.

Due to the high cost of property in Taipei, there are particular transferable development rights issues that are limited to the capital, so the Taipei City Government is to urge the Executive Yuan to establish an ad hoc committee to discuss and resolve the problems, Taipei Mayor Ko Wen-je (柯文哲) said yesterday.

The city government yesterday afternoon held its sixth Living Justice Forum at the Regent Taipei hotel, and urban environments and transferable development rights were high on the agenda.

In his opening speech, Ko said the living justice forums were held so that Taipei residents’ problems can be discussed, adding that he believes the first step to solving problems is to first identify and face them.

The two main problems that need to be discussed are the transferable development rights of river areas and historic sites, he said, adding that the lack of clear regulations can cause problems in urban planning and management.    [FULL  STORY]

In the message released by the Presidential Office, Tsai said that

she hoped Taiwan and Japan would forge closer ties in the wake of the LDP’s victory.

The president’s congratulatory message was conveyed via Chiou I-jen (邱義仁), head of the Taiwan-Japan Relations Association (TJRA), a semi-official Taiwanese agency in Taipei that handles relations with Japan.

The LDP won a strong mandate in the snap general election Sunday, taking two-thirds of the seats in the parliament, which is expected to strengthen Abe’s hard line position against North Korea and create room to push for revision of the country’s pacifist Constitution.    [FULL  STORY]

yesterday with the Chinese characters for “Taiwan” tattooed on his forehead, saying that he regretted having had it done while intoxicated.

Initial reports said that the tattoo was the result of a misunderstanding between the tattooist and a foreigner, who was identified by some media as being British. The Briton reportedly visited a local tattoo shop on Friday after getting drunk and made what he later called a “rash decision.”

A man, who claimed to be a tattoo artist, posted a photo of the Briton’s face online on Saturday, saying that the man came to his shop seeking ways to remove or modify the tattoo.

Because the tattoo covers a large surface of the man’s skin, the tattoo artist said he did not believe that he could manage the task and hence turned to the Internet for help.

The post attracted mixed reactions. Some people criticized the tattooist who tattooed “Taiwan” on the man’s forehead for lacking professionalism and ethical conduct.
