Taiwan’s indigenous languages. The bill was drawn up by the Council and came before the Legislature for review Thursday.

Taiwan is home to 16 officially recognized indigenous groups, each with its own language. However, the minister said that ten of these languages are critically endangered. He said this was part of a wider loss of speakers brought about by social change. He said that while the constitution protects indigenous languages and culture, there is not yet any law specifying how this should be done.

Icyang Parod outlined several of the bill’s provisions. They include a rule putting the central government in charge of standardizing writing systems and coining new words in these languages. The bill will also require the government to come up with development policies for each language based on its use and how well it is being passed on.

The national flag of the Republic of China (ROC), which is the official name of Taiwan, will be allowed at the 2017 Summer Universiade in Taipei. That was the word from the head of Taiwan’s Sports Administration, Lin Te-fu, on Wednesday.

Lin was responding to a question from lawmaker Wu Su-yao at the legislature’s Education and Culture Committee. Wu asked him to give a clear explanation of what sorts of items would be allowed at sporting venues, and what would be considered “politically sensitive.” Wu said it was important for Taiwan to make sure that, as the host nation, it did not create a stir at its own event.

When Wu asked if the nation’s flag would be allowed inside the venue as it was when Taipei hosted the Deaflympics in 2009, Lin said that would be acceptable.

Uber has swept the globe since it was first launched in 2009. It first arrived in Taiwan to much fanfare in 2013 with actor and TV hosts Alex and Lisa Wang taking a ride to mark the occasion. At the time, Taipei was only its third Asian city location, which was an indication of how positively Uber viewed the free-market economy in Taiwan.

But there have also been significant issues with the Taiwanese Government, which have hamstrung Uber’s operations here and finally led to their withdrawal from the market earlier this year.    [FULL  STORY]
