Carrier transit a warning from Beijing: lawmakers

Taipei Times

Lawmakers across party lines yesterday said the entry of the Chinese aircraft carrier Liaoning into the nation’s air defense identification zone was a warning from Beijing to Taiwan.

Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Legislator Lo Chih-cheng (羅致政), who co-chairs the legislature’s Foreign and National Defense Committee, said it was a warning sent by Beijing to intimidate Taiwan, and undermines peace and stability in the region.

However, it was more of a “diplomatic intimidation” than an actual military threat, he said, adding that the Ministry of National Defense has stayed on top of the situation.

The incident came amid a visit by President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) to four of the nation’s Central American allies in an effort to consolidate bilateral ties, after the west African island nation of Sao Tome and Principe severed diplomatic relations with Taiwan on Dec. 20 and later established official ties with China.    [FULL  STORY]

TAIPEI, Taiwan — The opposition Kuomintang amended regulations for internal party elections on Wednesday, following criticism from Central Standing Committee member Yao Chiang-lin (姚江臨) and a recommendation from the party’s Miaoli County division.

Yao had called the previous voter eligibility rules for internal party elections “unreasonable.”

In a statement released Wednesday, the KMT said that it would publicly release membership figures regularly to show its commitment to a “fair and transparent” election for the party’s chairmanship and representatives.

The statement explained that the party has implemented stronger administrative procedures on party membership applications and voter eligibility.

The number of members eligible to vote will be published every Tuesday and Friday, with the statistics updated until Jan. 20.    [FULL  STORY]

It was Ma’s second appearance as a defendant in the case since leaving office in May last year.

Ker, who filed the case, accused Ma of contravening the Criminal Code, the Communication Security and Surveillance Act (通訊監察保護法) and the Personal Information Protection Act (個人資料保護法) in connection with alleged wiretapping of telephone conversations between Ker and then-legislative speaker Wang Jin-pyng (王金平).

Ma smiled but did not answer reporters’ questions when heading into the courtroom yesterday afternoon, escorted by security personnel.    [FULL  STORY]

year, the Environmental Protection Administration (EPA) announced Monday.

The bigger fines are guided by the government’s amended “Vehicular Air Pollutant Emission Standards,” which stipulate that motorcycles and cars that fail their first mandatory air pollution emissions test will be fined NT$12,000 (US$374.2) and NT$24,000, respectively.

Vehicle owners can be fined double or triple that amount if their cars fail to pass second and third inspection tests within a year, the EPA said.

Prior to the amended standard, motorcycle and car owners were only subject to a maximum “one-time” fine of NT$6,000 and NT$12,000, respectively, if their vehicles failed to pass the emissions test.    [FULL  STORY]
