Pulitzer Prize-winning poet to attend Taipei book fair

The Pulitzer Prize-winning American poet Robert Hass will be among the authors attending the 2016 Taipei International Book Exhibition, which is scheduled to kick off Feb. 16.

Hass, who was poet laureate of the United States from 1995-1997, will take part in a talk at the fair Feb. 18 with his poet wife Brenda Hillman, according to the Taipei Book Fair Foundation.

Hass’s poetry collection “Time and Materials” won the 2007 National Book Award and shared the 2008 Pulitzer Prize for poetry. Hillman’s poetry collection “Practical Water” won the 2009 Los Angeles Times Book Prize for poetry.

Other international authors that will attend the fair include bestselling Polish fantasy author Andrzej Sapkowski, known for his series “The Witcher,” New Zealand illustrator Donovan Bixley, and award-winning Israeli writer Etgar Keret.     [FULL  STORY]

Taipei, Feb. 7 (CNA) “Yes! Thank you!” Huang Guang-wei (黃洸201602070025t0001偉), 20, shouted when he was freed Sunday from the rubble of the 16-story Weiguan Jinlong building in Tainan to cheers from emergency teams and his family.

Huang had been trapped for some 30 hours since around 4 a.m. Saturday, when the residential complex toppled in a magnitude 6.4 earthquake that left 29 people dead as of Sunday afternoon.

Rescue workers had to cut though steel bars to get to Huang, who was eventually pulled out and taken to a hospital. He had several bruises but appeared to be in good condition otherwise.     [FULL  STORY]

magnitude 6.4 earthquake struck southern Taiwan at 3:57am. At least 15 people were killed and more than 400 injured as of press time last night.

Among private donors, the Lin Rung San Foundation of Culture and Social Welfare (財團法人林榮三文化公益基金會) led the way, pledging NT$100 million (US$2.98 million) to the victims of the disaster. Mr Lin Rung San (林榮三) founded the Taipei Times and its sister paper the Liberty Times. He passed away on Nov. 28 last year.

Formosa Plastics Corp (台塑企業) pledged NT$50 million to help with emergency rescue efforts while Yulon Group (裕隆集團) pledged NT$10 million for the same purpose.     [FULL  STORY]

KMT’s Chu, DPP pledge donations for quake relief

New Taipei City Mayor Eric Chu (朱立倫) of the Kuomintang (KMT) on Saturday donated NT$1 million (US$29,851) for disaster relief in the wake of a powerful earthquake that struck southern Taiwan earlier in the day.

The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) also pledged NT$3 million, while its legislative caucus donated NT$1 million to the relief efforts. Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文), president-elect and chairwoman of the DPP, had announced earlier that she would give NT$1 million.

The 6.4-magnitude quake struck southern Taiwan at 3:57 a.m., killing at least seven people and injuring more than 400. As of 2:30 p.m. Saturday, some 11 people were still trapped in a 16-story residential building in Tainan, one of the 13 structures in the city that fully or partly collapsed in the quake.

During a visit to a temple in Yonghe District in New Taipei, Chu pledged a NT$1 million donation and prayed for blessings on all the people of Taiwan and protection of the country from further disaster.     [FULL  STORY]

The office said Wednesday that it was contacted on Feb. 1 by a Taiwanese man, who arrived in Manila on Jan. 31 but was unable to get in touch with his wife, who had arrived in the Philippines on Jan. 26.

The display on the top of the building read “Go Tainan” and “Bless Taiwan,” and ran from 6pm to 10pm.

Taipei 101 said that the messages were displayed in tribute to those killed or injured in the earthquake and to boost the morale of the rescuers.

MOL to widen discussions on hiring foreign workers

Ministry of Labor (MOL) will widen discussions on the regulations 6733527of hiring foreign professionals with legislators and local labor groups, said Labor Minister Chen Hsiung-wen Thursday.

In a bid to strengthen Taiwan’s talent pool and retain skilled foreign workers, the ministry last December proposed the relaxation of regulations on foreign workers, creating a friendlier environment for foreign professionals.

use credit cards, spending through the system in Taiwan hit a record high in 2015, the Financial Supervisory Commission (FSC) said Friday.

Citing statistics, the FSC, the top financial supervisor in Taiwan, said that consumers in Taiwan spent a total of NT$2.2 trillion (US$65.67 billion) using credit cards in 2015, up 7.9 percent from a year earlier.

It was the sixth consecutive year in which Taiwanese credit card purchases hit a record high, the FSC said. However, the year-on-year growth in credit card spending for 2015 was lower than in 2013 and 2014, when the increase surpassed 8 percent, the commission said.     [FULL  STORY][

The ROC Ministry of Economic Affairs welcomed the breakthrough, attributing it to ongoing discussions since 2007 under bilateral communication platforms such as the Trade and Investment Framework Agreement.

After the U.S. began accepting exports of Taiwan produced Phalaenopsis orchids in growing medium in 2004, the government started seeking the same treatment for Oncidium orchids. “The issue was also a key item on the agenda of the ninth rounds of TIFA discussions held in Taipei City last October,” an MOEA official said.     [FULL  STORY]

Lawmakers’ no-confidence motion rights upheld

The Council of Grand Justices on Thursday ruled to uphold the legality of opposition lawmakers introducing a motion for a vote of no confidence during an extraordinary session in the legislature in 2012.

Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) caucus whip Ker Chien-ming (柯建銘) said he welcomes the decision.

“This is belated justice for us,” Ker said yesterday. “It affirmed the action taken by the DPP at the time conformed to the spirit of the Constitution.”
