TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – China wanted to cut the number of Chinese tourists visiting Taiwan in the run-up to the January 16 elections, unconfirmed reports said Tuesday.

Both the size of the cuts and the reason for the unexpected decision differed according to the media offering the reports.

The most alarmist version had the Taiwan Affairs Office, China’s ministry for relations with Taiwan, seeking a cutback of 95 percent in the number of Chinese tourists visiting the island.

Another report had China targeting a 50-percent reduction for the period from December 16 to January 15, or the final month before the presidential and legislative elections.

The motives for China’s government suddenly wanting a sharp drop in the number of its citizens traveling to Taiwan also were varied, depending on the media reports.     [FULL  STORY]

prominent Japanese scientist Tasuku Honjo on the disbursement of a NT$5 million fund for his cancer immunotherapy research, which was part of his award for winning the first Tang Prize in biopharmaceutical science last year.

The agreement was signed at Kyoto University in Japan between Honjo and Chang Herng-yuh (張恒裕), director of the foundation’s Planning and Development Department.

Under the agreement, Honjo will receive NT$5 million for his research project, titled “Improvement of PD-1 Antibody Cancer Immunotherapy.” In 2014, Honjo and James P. Allison of the United States won the first Tang Prize in biopharmaceutical science, which earned them a shared cash prize of NT$40 million (US$1.23 million) and a research grant of NT$10 million to be used over five years.

A professor at Kyoto University, Honjo discovered PD-1 (programmed cell death protein-1) in 1992, and later established it as an inhibitor of the T-cell, a type of lymphocyte that plays a central role in cell-mediated immunity. In 2014, anti-PD-1 antibodies nivolumab and/or pembrolizumab were approved in Japan and the United States to treat patients with advanced melanoma or melanoma that could not be removed by surgery.     [FULL  STORY]

The CDC said that efforts to contain the disease have paid off but noted that previous dengue fever outbreaks in the country typically began to peak in October.

The public should stay alert and dispose of any standing water in their immediate surroundings to prevent mosquitoes from breeding, the CDC advised. The insect is the primary vector of the disease, which typically hits the tropical south of Taiwan each summer.

In the two worst hit areas, the cities of Tainan and Kaohsiung, the number of new cases reported Sunday was 219 and 63, respectively, the CDC said.     [FULL  STORY]

The reserve fund has recorded an all-time high since the inception of the universal insurance program, he said, noting that the ministry will discuss the feasibility to reduce the monthly NHI fee for the next fiscal year.

According to Chu, the fund will be kept in reserve to balance out any deficit should there be a surplus of expenditure in the future.

The proposed plan to reduce the monthly NHI charges per person will be carved out by the end of October for further review by the MOHW in November, he said.     [FULL  STORY]

NSB director supports death to spies

‘DETESTABLE’ TRAITORS:Yang Kuo-chian was speaking in response to lenient sentences in recent cases of spying for China. He vowed tight security in the run-up to January polls

National Security Bureau (NSB) Director-General Yang Kuo-chian (楊國強) yesterday said court judges should have handed down more severe sentences against people found guilty of leaking state secrets and that, in his opinion, they deserve capital punishment.

While presenting reports on other national security issues at the legislature’s Foreign and National Defense Committee meeting, Yang was responding to questions from Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) Legislator Tsai Chin-lung (蔡錦隆).

Tsai said there were a number of espionage cases in which Taiwanese were caught passing classified military information to China, and those receiving sentences included retired high-ranking military officers, while others were in active service.

Tsai pointed to the more recent espionage trial of Chinese spy Zhen Xiaojiang (鎮小江), who received only a four-year sentence, while the recruited Taiwanese ex-military officers did not have to serve prison terms after receiving suspended sentences.     [FULL  STORY]

hot spring areas — Sichongxi in the southern county of Pingtung — as the government and industry officials hope that the four-month fair celebrated across the country will boost tourism.

Despite its relatively small size, Taiwan has one of the highest concentrations and greatest variety of thermal springs in the world, due to its location next to an oceanic trench and volcanic system in a tectonic collision zone. There are more than 100 thermal springs in the country, ranging from hot springs to cold springs, mud springs and seabed hot springs.

The island’s former colonial rulers from Japan developed Taiwan’s hot springs in the early 1900s and brought with them the onsen culture of spring soaking. Although the hot spring culture was not promoted after the Republic of China took over Taiwan in 1945, the government began promoting hot springs in 1999, seeing it as a way to attract domestic and overseas tourists.     [FULL  STORY]

and Democratic Progressive Party to work out their political differences for the better of Taiwan, reports said Sunday.

The PFP contender was at Tainan’s Guanziling over the weekend, where he visited the area’s famous Fire and Water Cave, a geological structure known for its unique natural landscape.

“Like fire within the water, and water within the fire, both parties should seek ways to work in mutual harmony,” he said.

Accompanied by former Tainan county commissioner Lee Ya-chiao of the KMT, Soong also compared metaphorically the relationship between the Taipei City government and the City Council with fire and water, in which both local entities have remained in co-existence for the development of Taiwan’s capital.

Taipei Mayor Ko Wen-je is expected to be invited to join the PFP at the City Council Monday morning to exchange views and opinions regarding the future developments of Taiwan’s capital city.     [FULL  STORY]
