“I think I will let everything run its course,” Chu said.

“I do not know which one of my aides spoke to Ko, but we are all friends and I will still extend my gratitude to him regardless of whether he comes to help me out or not,” he added.     [FULL  STORY]

With the US believed to be ready to announce a new US$1 billion arms sales package for Taiwan, pressure is growing to further increase the flow of weapons and to make future sales on a more regular basis.

“We should be seeing even more regular transfers of equipment that would help shore up Taiwanese security,” US House Committee on Foreign Affairs chairman Eliot Engel said.

He was speaking as the committee passed the Taiwan Naval Support Act, urging US President Barrack Obama to quickly transfer at least two guided-missile frigates to the nation.

The transfer is expected to be part of a new arms package to be sent for US Congressional approval before the end of this month.      [FULL  STORY]

looking for the “discourse” to decide which legislative candidates to support in the capital.

In the campaign for the January 16 legislative elections, the Democratic Progressive Party has only nominated two of its own members for the eight legislative districts in Taipei City. In the six other seats, it is backing a wide variety of candidates from other parties or independents.

There have been reports that the DPP and Ko would like to see those candidates form an alliance, with names like “Capital Progress Alliance” or “Capital Change Alliance” being bandied about by the media.

On Saturday, Ko attended the official opening of the campaign headquarters of one of the independent candidates backed by the DPP, Lee Ching-yuan, at present a member of the Taipei City Council.     [FULL  STORY]

In a news release, the interior ministry said Chen, Coast Guard Administration Minister Wang Chung-Yi (王崇儀), and officials from other government agencies traveled to the island by plane.

The government is declaring to the international community that it plans to transform Taiping into an island of peace, ecological preservation and low carbon emissions and will help realize President Ma Ying-jeou’s (馬英九) “South China Sea Peace Initiative,” the ministry said.

It said the inauguration of the wharf and lighthouse was historically significant because Saturday marked the 69th anniversary of the return of Taiping Island from Japan to the Republic of China.     [FULL  STORY]

the seeming lack of accomplishments under the Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) over the past eight years is not because of a lack of actual accomplishments, but because the party is reflective and strives to do better.

“The KMT is a party that does things firmly and does not boast of its accomplishments,” she said, adding that the party is building its confidence and stepping forward to tell people how much it had achieved.

Wang made the remarks at an event hosted by a support group for KMT presidential candidate Eric Chu (朱立倫) and KMT Legislator Ting Shou-chung (丁守中) in Taipei’s Beitou District (北投).     [FULL  STORY]

County and hosted a talk after reading a Facebook post by a high-school dean.

Two months ago, National Pingtung Senior Girls’ High School dean Huang Tsai-hung (黃再鴻), frustrated by numerous failed attempts to convince celebrities and intellectuals to visit his school, took his grievances to Facebook.

Hsuan wrote an article titled “Give the children in Pingtung a chance,” saying that Pingtung and Kaohsiung are on the same latitude, and that many writers and renowned people are willing to visit Kaohsiung, but are reluctant to cross the Gaoping River (高屏溪) into Pingtung, because they expect to be greeted by an “endless cultural desert.”

He said that if people were to give the children in Pingtung — who are in their own way kind of heart and brilliant — a chance, people would find that the children only lack the opportunity to improve themselves.     [FULL  STORY]

TAIPEI–A tropical storm that has formed off Guam Friday is not expected to threaten Taiwan, the Central Weather Bureau (CWB) said, with an expert explaining that it is not uncommon for tropical storms to form in December.

As of 2 p.m. Friday, Tropical Storm Melor was centered 2,370 kilometers southeast of Eluanbi, the southernmost tip of Taiwan, moving at a speed of 27 kilometers per hour in a west-northwesterly direction toward the Philippines, according to the bureau.

Melor, the 27th storm of the 2015 Pacific typhoon season, was packing sustained winds of 65 kilometers per hour, with gusts reaching 90 kilometers per hour, the bureau said.

The storm could move toward the Philippines, but chances are slim that it will affect Taiwan directly, according to forecasters.     [FULL  STORY]
