down the rice grown in fields contaminated by slag dumped by a waste treatment company and that the rice harvested from the farmland beside a river in Tainan’s Xuejia District has not made its way into the market.

It noted that the harvested rice was first sent to a drying plant and later to a milling plant in Chiayi County, where a check of the milling plant’s warehouses found more than 200,000 tons of suspect rice.

To ensure food safety for consumers, the agency said that all the bagged rice has been sealed and it is certain that none of it has made its way into the market.

The agency will also conduct random tests on the rice to see if it contains heavy metals. The results of the tests will be unveiled Aug. 18.     [FULL  STORY]

Republic of China Army is displaying its latest weapons systems, which would be deployed should the People’s Liberation Army try and bring the fight to mainland Taiwan. The ROC Navy and Air Force also showed what tools they have in their arsenal to defeat the PLA’s naval and air forces in asymmetrical warfare.

The Sea Oryx Missile System, developed by the National Chung-Shan Institute of Science and Technology, is one of the few new weapon systems the ROC Navy displayed during this year’s exhibition. Based on the Sky Sword I air-to-air missile, the missile can be equipped aboard the ROC Navy’s Tuo River-class corvette in order to intercept enemy aircraft and missiles.

Also, a promotional video showed how a Tuo River-class corvette could sink a Type 052D guided missile destroyer after taking out two Kh-31 anti-ship missiles and two Su-30 fighters.     [FULL  STORY]

contributions during World War II are in Taiwan to attend events in commemoration of the end of the war and to highlight the importance of peace.

At the invitation of the Republic of China government, Cindy Vautrin, great-grandniece of US missionary Minnie Vautrin; and Thomas Rabe, grandson of German businessman John Rabe, are attending the events to mark the 70th anniversary of the end of WWII.

“From my perspective, I think that it’s important to continue to recognize and to remember what happened and to learn from that,” Vautrin told reporters in Taipei.

“Peace is really ultimately what we should be supporting and I think that having these types of ceremonies commemorating what happened, remembering what happened, teaches us what not to do for the future,”she said.     [FULL  STORY]

Washington, Aug. 13 (CNA) Cross-Taiwan Strait relations are now at an important juncture, faced with a choice of which path ahead to take, a senior Chinese official in charge of Taiwan affairs said in the United States on Thursday. Zhang Zhijun (???), chief of the Taiwan Affairs Office under China’s State Council, is visiting Washington D.C. Aug. 12-14.

On Thursday, Zhang had a lunch meeting with Daniel Russel, U.S. assistant secretary of state for East Asian and Pacific affairs. The Chinese official later meet with U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Antony Blinken at the State Department. Zhang told reporters that during his meetings with the U.S. officials, he mentioned that cross-strait relations had improved since 2008 on the basis of the “1992 consensus” and opposition to Taiwan independence.

This has benefited the people on both sides, especially in Taiwan, and helped to maintain peace and stability across the strait, he said. Beijing hopes that the peaceful development of relations will continue but it is also aware that cross-strait ties are now at a very important juncture, faced with the choice of which road ahead to take, he said. One choice is to stick to the “1992 consensus” and walk along the path of peaceful development, while the other option is to return to the old path of Taiwan independence, he said.     [FULL  STORY]

This is according to Chen Yi-hua, a special commissioner of Academia Historica, who likened Academia Historica Thursday to the US-based Hoover Institution, which owns Chiang Kai-shek’s diaries.

“If the Hoover Institution is the World War II research site in the West, Academia Historica is its counterpart in the East,” Chen told CNA.

Chen said that the Chiang Kai-shek archive has become one of the institution’s anchors, as it is full of important data on the second Sino-Japan war.     [FULL  STORY]

They stated that 80% of the public are satisfied with their current living quality, 72% of the public are satisfied with their current work environment and labor conditions, and 70% of the public are content with their current financial status. Despite the improvements from last year surveys, many people are surprised by the numbers.

2015 survey of the quality of the general publics’ lives is 10% higher than the one conducted in 2014, yet the results spark controversies. Many data have proven that the economy in Taiwan is not doing well. The export has declined for 6 consecutive months, the GDP might fallen below 2% and the real wage has degenerated to the level of 15 years ago.
