The number of police officers who applied for early retirement citing pressure from overwork over the past three years signals an alarming loss of police capabilities and a consequent impact on national security, a Control Yuan member said.

The number of police officers applying for voluntary retirement has been increasing annually over the past five years, Control Yuan member Gau Fehng-shian (高鳳仙) said.

In 2010, 1,630 officers applied, rising to 2,382 last year, with an average of about 2,000 applying in each of the past three years, Gau said, adding that a shortage of police officers would affect national and public security.     [FULL  STORY]

that Taiwan use the US-South Korea free trade agreement (FTA) as a model in its preparations for joining the proposed Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) trade bloc.

Taiwan has been upping its efforts to push for its TPP bid since last year, he said, adding that “we have been advised by the US government that we could use the US-Korea FTA as a model for our participation.”

He made the remarks in a question-and-answer session during a video conference with Stanford University, in response to questions about Taiwan’s hopes of joining the proposed trade bloc led by the US.

The TPP is being negotiated by the US and 11 other countries, which are all Taiwan’s trading partners, he said. Bilateral trade between Taiwan and the 12 countries account for about 35% of Taiwan’s foreign trade, meaning a total of US$200 billion per year, he added.     [FULL  STORY]

The manager had overreacted, but meant no harm, the chain said.

The manager requested that the two dogs stay outside the store because customers had complained about allowing dogs in, the chain said.

The company promised to better train store personnel and said that it welcomed guide dogs into its convenience stores.

The statement came after a guide dog trainer surnamed Lai (賴) wrote on Facebook about his encounter on Wednesday, saying that the manager asked him to remove the two guide dogs he had brought into a 7-Eleven in Changhua on Tuesday.     [FULL  STORY][

China warns U.S. over Taiwan presidential hopeful visit

The Star

By: nReuters

BEIJING (Reuters) – China warned the United States on Friday not to send the wrong signals about Taiwan, after the presidential hopeful of the self-ruled island’s main opposition party visited Washington to rally support from U.S. officials and politicians.

The 12-day, six-city U.S. tour by Tsai Ing-wen, chairwoman of the pro-independence Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), is seen as an attempt to ease U.S. concerns that her potential election in a January poll would strain ties with China.

Washington backs a “one-China policy” and has no diplomatic ties with Taiwan but is its main ally. The State Department has declined to give details of Tsai’s meetings with U.S. officials, but she has met congressional leaders in Washington.

“China opposes any Taiwan independence people promoting Taiwan independence internationally, or engaging in any Taiwan independence activities,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei told reporters at a regular press briefing.

“We demand that the United States strictly abide by the one-China principle … not send the wrong signal to Taiwan,” Hong added.

Nationalist forces fled to Taiwan in 1949 at the end of a civil war with the Communists that has never formally ended. China considers Taiwan a renegade province, to be brought under its control by force if necessary.

The first, and so far only, DPP president, Chen Shui-bian infuriated Beijing during his 2000-2008 rule.     [FULL  STORY]
