world No. 1 Serena Williams at the Australian Open yesterday, while fellow Taiwanese Chan Hao-ching and Chan Yung-jan were handed the second seeding in the women’s doubles at Melbourne Park.

World No. 90 Hsieh fought back from 3-6, 0-4 down against Latvian world No. 81 Jelena Ostapenko, completing a 3-6, 7-5, 6-1 victory in a minute short of two hours on Court 5.

The Taiwanese saved seven of 13 break points and converted eight of 12, taking advantage of her opponent’s 15 double faults and 62 unforced errors to win 104 of the 197 points contested to advance to a second-round clash with 21-time Grand Slam winner Williams.

The Kaohsiung-born 30-year-old, who won her only two WTA Tour singles titles in Kuala Lumpur and Guangzhou in 2012, but who has two Grand Slam doubles titles to her name, will have nothing to lose against the world’s top-ranked player, who has won 69 singles titles.     [FULL  STORY]

Taiwanese sisters Chan Hao-ching and Chan Yung-jan crashed out of the Apia International in their rain-delayed semi-final yesterday.

The second seeds fell to a 6-2, 6-4 defeat to third-seeded French pairing Caroline Garcia and Kristina Mladenovic in 65 minutes in Sydney.
Garcia and Mladenovic saved three of six break points and converted six of six, winning 54 of the 100 points contested.

The Chan sisters struggled with their serve, recording five double faults and hitting just 61 percent of their first serves, compared with their opponents’ 82 percent. It is a flaw that they will be looking to put right as they head to Melbourne for next week’s first Grand Slam of the season, the Australian Open.     [FULL  STORY]

second remaining on the game clock turned a 62-63 deficit into a 64-63 lead and the red-hot Dacin Tigers held off Taiwan Beer to win by the same score at the Banciao Gymnasium in New Taipei City last night

It was the Tigers’ eighth win their past nine outings.

“I guess I was in the right place at the right time,” Chou said after rallying his club from behind to top the Brew Crew in a game that could have gone either way.
The Tigers’ emerging superstar tied a season-high with six three-pointers on a 24-point effort to lift his team past a feisty Brew Crew in a win that pushed the Tigers up a notch to force a two-way tie for second in the standings.

They trail league-leading Pure Youth Construction by 1.5 games.     [FULL  STORY]

The deal reportedly includes an opt-out clause after two years and a sixth season option for Chen, a 30-year-old free agent who had been a starter for the Baltimore Orioles since 2012. The Orioles will get a 2016 second-round draft pick in return.

Chen went 11-8 with a 3.34 earned-run average over 31 starts last year and in four North American seasons since leaving Japan’s Chunichi Dragons has gone 46-32 with a 3.72 earned-run average over 706 2/3 innings in 117 starts.

Bank of Taiwan, Fubon Braves end weekend with wins

Bank of Taiwan last night made it two wins in a row by dominating Kinmen Kaoliang in a 77-58 blowout at the Banciao Gymnasium in New Taipei City to close out a perfect 2-0 weekend on a high note.

Luke Nevill led a Banker attack against a vulnerable Kinmen Kaoliang interior defense — which was missing the service of big man Kyle Barone who was out with a knee injury — by connecting from short range on a 23-point, 18-rebound night. The Australian playmaker was well on his way to a double-20 effort before skipper Hung Chun-cheng pulled him off the floor for a good part of the fourth to rest his top gun.

Also starring was Chang “Trumpet” Po-sheng, who came off the Bankers’ bench with three three-pointers from downtown on a 15-point effort to pick up the scoring slack left by team captain Chen Hsuan-hsiang, who managed to score only four points, well below his season average of 10.3.     [FULL  STORY]

League officials announced the result of last month’s Player of the Month voting earlier this week, with Lu “Male Model” Cheng-ju of the Yulon Luxgens winning after an outstanding stretch of play that helped his club ascend from near the bottom of the standings to No. 4 in the league.

The perimeter threat with a master’s degree from Chinese Culture University in Taipei, who became the first player to reach the 600-three-pointer plateau with a great start to the season, followed up his two Player of the Week selections last month with the Player of the Month trophy on Tuesday.

Even though individual achievements are rarely emphasized among players in this day and age, the soft-spoken swingman has every right to be proud of his accomplishment.     [FULL  STORY]
