championship in Chambers Bay, Washington, on Friday with a two-round score of 3-over par that has left him tied for 35th.

Playing in his first tournament as a pro after graduating from the University of Washington earlier this month, the 23-year-old followed up a first-round 1-over par 71 on Thursday with a 72 on Friday that was marred by a triple-bogey on the par-4 483-yard 10th hole.

“I knew that if you want to post a good score on this course, you can’t make a big mistake off the tee,” Pan said, but that’s what happened on the 10th hole.

He sent his tee shot into the tall grass lining the fairway and then after digging his ball out found the sand trap before finishing with two putts.     [FULL  STORY]

Taiwan’s Chan Yung-jan and Zheng Jie of China advanced to the doubles semi-finals at the Aegon Classic in Birmingham, England, on Friday without hitting a ball as two of the three scheduled quarter-finals ended in walkovers.

The cross-strait duo were handed a walkover win after wild-cards Simona Halep and Heather Watson withdrew from their quarter-final after Romanian Halep lost a marathon singles quarter-final 2-6, 6-0, 7-6 (7-4) to Kristina Mladenovic of France in 1 hour, 51 minutes earlier in the day.

Chan and Zheng were due to face fourth-seeded Spanish duo Garbine Muguruza and Carla Suarez Navarro in the semi-finals late yesterday.     [FULL  STORY]

Taiwan’s Chan Hao-ching was knocked out in the first round of the doubles at the Aegon Classic in Birmingham, England, on Thursday, despite fighting back after losing the first set.

Chan and Andreja Klepac of Slovenia, who were trailing 3-1 against second seeds Timea Babos of Hungary and Kristina Mladenovic on Wednesday when rain delayed the match until the following day, lost the first set 7-5, but fought back to win the second 6-4 and force a super tiebreak.

However, the second seeds proved too strong in the decider at the Edgbaston Priory Club, completing a 7-5, 4-6, 10-6 victory in 1 hour, 26 minutes.

Both pairings saved four of eight break-point chances while also converting four of eight, but the second seeds edged the total points won 73 to 72 to set up a quarter-final against Michaella Krajicek of the Netherlands and Barbora Strycova of the Czech Republic, who defeated wild-cards Eugenie Bouchard and Svetlana Kuznetsova 6-2, 6-3.     [FULL  STORY]

the Orioles beat the skidding Phillies 4-0 on Monday.

Chen (3-4) struck out nine and walked one to help the Orioles win for the ninth time in 11 games. The eight innings tied his career high and was the longest stint by an Orioles starter this month.

Zach Britton got the final three outs to seal the last-placed Phillies’ seventh straight defeat. Philadelphia have been blanked in three of their past four games.

The Phillies have lost 11 straight on the road and are an MLB-worst 7-27 in away games. The loss — their 17th in the last 20 games overall — dropped them a season-high 21 games under .500 (22-43).     [FULL  STORY]

Taipei yesterday, as the visitors made it two wins out of two at the start of their campaign.

At a more than three-quarters full Taipei Municipal Stadium, with a large contingent of away supporters, many who turned up at 5pm before the stadium had opened, both sides got off to a cagey start, with the first effort on goal coming from Taiwan’s Xavier Chen from long range in the 10th minute.

The visitors soon began to take control of the game and Anon Pokkhao hit the post following a defensive error by the hosts in the 14th minute.

Teerasil Dangda put the visitors in front in the 21st minute when a long ball completely split the Taiwan defense and the nimble striker fired past goalkeeper Lu Kun-chi and into the top-left corner.     [FULL  STORY]

The league-leading Lamigo Monkeys continued their winning ways by topping the Chinatrust Brothers 9-2 at the Taoyuan International Baseball Stadium last night to extend their winning streak to a season-high six games.

Starter Mitch Atkins tossed his best game of the season since joining the Primates early last month by holding the men in the golden uniforms to three scattered singles over seven dominant innings, while fanning eight and walking a pair to improve to 4-3 for the year.

Other than loading up the bases with one out in the seventh inning, which he managed to pitch out of, the American right-hander did not allow a Brothers runner past first base through the sixth inning.     [FULL  STORY]
