Pao shines as Taiwan defeat Iran

Michelle Pao yesterday scored a brace as the Taiwanese women’s national team triumphed 4-1 over Iran and seized first place in Group C of the second round of the Asian Football Confederation Women’s Olympic Qualifying Tournament.

Before yesterday’s final group match at Grand Hamad Stadium in Doha, both sides had vowed to go all-out for the win, as only the top team in each group advances to the next round of qualifying for next year’s Tokyo Games.

It was Taiwan who made the most of their opportunities to score three goals in the first half.

Attacking midfielder Pao took a pass on the left and lashed home to put Taiwan ahead in the 12th minute.    [FULL  STORY]

Tzu-ying (戴資穎) both advanced to the round of 16 in the men’s and women’s singles events at the 2019 Badminton World Federation (BWF) Singapore Open on Wednesday.

Chou defeated Tanongsak Saensomboonsuk of Thailand in two straight sets, 21-18 and 21-16, at the Singapore Indoor Stadium to reach the second round of the men’s singles event.

World No. 1 Tai battled to a 21-14, 10-21, 21-18 win over American Zhang Beiwen (張蓓雯) in the first round of the women’s singles event, which lasted 44 minutes.

Taiwan takes gold for first time ever in women’s world ice hockey championship

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Taiwan national women’s ice hockey team won their first ever division championship on Sunday.

The team took part in the 2019 Ice Hockey World Women’s Championship, hosted this year in Finland. Parallel with last year’s event, Taiwan faced off against Iceland in the final round on Sunday, but this year defeated the team 5:2, clinching the division win, according to the Liberty Times.

Taiwan has now also been promoted from Division IIB to Division IIA.

The team prepared for the championship in Taiwan before flying out to Europe.The final match started with a strong lead from Taiwan, Liberty Times reports, before Iceland launched a counterattack in the second round, closing the gap.    [FULL  STORY]

Tai Tzu-ying retains women’s singles title at Malaysia Open

Taipei, April 7 (CNA) Taiwanese badminton star Tai Tzu-ying (戴資穎) earned her third consecutive women’s singles title in Malaysia, after winning the 2019 Malaysia Open final Sunday.

Tai beat world No. 4 Akane Yamaguchi of Japan 21-16, 21-19 in two straight games, winning her first title of the season to further consolidate her world No. 1 women’s singles ranking.

Tai and Yamaguchi had previously played 14 times, with Tai winning eight of those games.

The 24-year-old Taiwanese got off to a good start in the final, taking a 6-1 lead over her Japanese opponent before winning the first game 21-16.    [FULL  STORY]

Taiwan topped Group C of Asia’s second-round qualifier for the Tokyo Olympic Games with two wins, ahead of powerhouse Iran, who have a 1-1 record.

The Philippines were the better side in the first half at the Grand Hamad Stadium, going in front on goals by Joyce Semacio and Patricia Tomanon, with Taiwan having to play catch-up.

Just before halftime, Taiwan were awarded a penalty-kick after illegal contact by the Philippine defense during a corner kick. Michelle Pao dispatched the ball to the upper right of the net, cutting the lead.    [FULL  STORY]

Tigers win to remain in playoff contention

While the Fubon Braves and Taiwan Beer have clinched the top spots, the bottom half of the playoff Super Basketball League (SBL) picture remains unclear after the Dacin Tigers on Thursday edged Kinmen Kaoliang to lift themselves into a three-way tie for fourth place.

American point guard O.J. Mayo scored the winning basket with three seconds left in the game to complete a 24-point turnaround for the Tigers, who prevailed over Kinmen 84-83 at Banciao Stadium in New Taipei City.

The eight-year NBA veteran, mostly with the Memphis Grizzlies and Milwaukee Bucks, put on a stellar display to post 37 points in the game, 16 of them in the final quarter, while teammate Lin Yi-hui scored 17 points.

Kinmen Kaoliang had a quick start, scoring 22 and 26 points in the first two quarters to go ahead 48-26 at the intermission and extending the lead to 24 points in the third quarter.

quarter-finals of the 2019 Malaysia Open Thursday after an easy win against Busanan Ongbamrungphan of Thailand.

Tai defeated Ongbamrungphan in two straight sets 21-16, 21-14 in only 36 minutes, being held April 2-7 in Kuala Lumpur.

In the first set, the world No. 1 and the world No. 25 kept the scores close at 10-11 until Tai consolidated a bigger lead by scoring four consecutive points, after which she never looked back to win 21-16.

The second set took a similar course when the score became tied at 8-8, until Tai broke through with an eight-point lead to finish 21-14.    [FULL  STORY]
