Taipei, June 22 (CNA) Taiwan's Pan Cheng-tsung (潘政琮) on Sunday fell well short of defending his title at the RBC Heritage golf tournament in South Carolina, finishing tied for 52nd at 9-under-par 275, 13 shots behind winner Webb Simpson of the United States.

Pan entered the final round eight shots behind four players, including Simpson, who were tied for the lead at 15-under-par, but he seemed to be making a run after birdieing three straight holes on the front nine.

A bogey on the par-4 ninth and a double bogey on the par-3 14th, however, dashed any hopes Pan might have had of a higher finish, and he finished the day with a 2-under 69.

Simpson won the tournament at 22-under, with Mexican Abraham Ancer finishing second at 21-under and American Daniel Berger and Tyrrell Hatton of England ending tied for third at 20-under.    [FULL  STORY]

Fans at Taipei Municipal Stadium on Sunday witnessed the upset of the Taiwan Football Premier League season so far, as the bottom-of-the-table Red Lions pulled off a shock 2-0 win over reigning champions Tatung, while Taichung Futuro held on to first place with a narrow 1-0 win thanks to a disputed penalty.

Tatung were among the frontrunners in pursuit of leaders Futuro, despite experiencing a slump in form after two straight defeats, and most people expected an easy victory over the Red Lions, who only picked up their first point when they held Hang Yuan to a scoreless draw the previous weekend.

Tatung signaled their intentions by starting with twin strikers Ange Samuel of the Ivory Coast and Ben Ouedraogo of Burkina Faso, with Taiwan international Onur Dogan and Honduran Elias Argueta in support, while the Red Lions countered with their own twin threat, Gerardo Rabre of Guatemala and Esteban Vasquez of Chile.

The Red Lions absorbed wave after wave of opposition attacks, before capitalizing on a mistake by Tatung’s Luis Fernando, with Rabre robbing the ball off the centerback and coolly slotting past goalkeeper Shih Hsin-an.    [FULL  STORY]

Taipei, June 21 (CNA) Cathay took home its 10th championship trophy Saturday after two straight wins against Taiyuan, which put up a strong defense that gave the most valuable player (MVP) title to someone who only returned to the Taiwan's Women Super Basketball League this season.

Following a landslide win on Friday, when Cathay beat Taiyuan in the first championship game 87-44, Taiyuan's strategy in the second game that might decide the title winner was to hold back Cathay's point guard Lin Yu-ting (林育庭).

Lin by herself notched up 20 points in Friday's game and has been seen as the player with the best chance of grabbing the MVP title.

On Saturday, however, she faced a strong defense and took only seven points, while her teammate Chen Yu-chun (陳鈺君) made 19 points, including six three-pointers.

Taipei, June 19 (CNA) A 12-discipline national sports event being held from Aug. 1-8 for Taiwanese athletes who were scheduled to attend the Olympic Games, before it was postponed, will include a total purse of over NT$1 million (US$33,830), organizers said Thursday.

An announcement on Sunday from the Chinese Taipei Badminton Association outlined a three-day badminton schedule at the beginning of August which will include world No. 1 female player Tai Tzu-ying (戴資穎) competing against male competitors.

The Sports Administration has since provided a list of other athletes set to take part in the competition.

Top names include 2016 Rio Games bronze medal-winning female weightlifter Kuo Hsing-chun (郭婞淳) and gymnast Lee Chih-kai (李智凱), both of whom have secured a place at the Tokyo Games, which will now be held from July 23 to Aug. 8, 2021, due to concerns about athletes' health amid the COVID-19 conoravirus pandemic.    [FULL  STORY]

.Taiwan’s Pan Cheng-tsung felt sure that the opportunity to defend his first US PGA Tour title had vanished when the RBC Heritage was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but when a revamped season schedule was announced, he was happy to see the Harbour Town showdown back in the lineup.

“I was really sad to see this canceled,” Pan said. “Usually, cancelation means I won’t be back for the whole year until next season. So, when they announced the new schedule, it was quite a surprise to me. I was really happy to see that.”

After only three months instead of 12, Pan was yesterday to tee off at Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, in a bid to duplicate his crown against a world-class field, including his playing partners for the first two days: American Rickie Fowler and world No. 1 Rory McIlroy.

“It’s great to be back,” Pan said. “It was my first victory and it’s probably the one I will always remember.”    [FULL  STORY]

Taipei, June 14 (CNA) World No. 1 female badminton player Tai Tzu-ying (戴資穎) will face male rivals in a competitive event organized by the Sports Administration for the country's top athletes in August, according to the Chinese Taipei Badminton Association.

Following discussions with coaches, the association said it drafted a match plan for badminton players during the first three days of the event, which is planned for Aug. 1-8 to see how athletes are progressing.

Given that few female players anywhere can challenge Tai, ranked first in the world in women's singles, the association picked former national champion Lin Chia-hsuan (林家翾) and Tsai Chieh-hao (蔡傑皓), a training partner with the national team, to go up against her, the sports body said.

With international competition shut down in almost every sport since March due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Taiwanese athletes, including many of its top badminton players, have tried to stay in shape by training at the National Sports Training Center in Kaohsiung.
