Taiwan yesterday were thoroughly dominated in a 7-0 thrashing by North Korea at Fu Jen Catholic University Stadium in New Taipei City, while Brunei edged Hong Kong 2-1 in Group F qualifiers for next year’s Asian Football Confederation U16 Championship.

The result dropped Taiwan into fourth place in the five-team group with only one win from three matches, just ahead of winless Macau.

North Korea, with three wins out of three in which they have scored 26 goals, are assured of first place.

Taiwan still have a slim chance of qualifying, but they have to win big and score often in tomorrow’s final game against Macau to try to climb above Brunei and Hong Kong on goal-difference and claim the second qualifying berth.    [FULL  STORY]

maker HTC was selling part of its operations and employers to U.S. Internet giant Google, a prominent financial expert said the government should make a bigger effort to support prominent Taiwanese brands, such as Giant, Gogoro and I-Mei Foods.

Taking part in a discussion about the HTC deal on Sanlih E-Television, commentator Tsai Ming-chang (蔡明彰) said the administration of President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) should assist native companies and brands which made contributions to Taiwan’s overall economy, in addition to her emphasis on a digital economy and green environmentally friendly policies.

The financial expert specifically mentioned I-Mei Foods as the example of a Taiwanese company with a good image. It was the only Taiwanese name which had entered the top-10 of Asia’s most influential brands in a review of 120 brands published in April last year, Tsai said.    [FULL  STORY]

fifth consecutive quarter, saying the economy remains mild and below its potential in the absence of inflationary pressures.

The move is intended to help support the nation’s export-focused economy that is expected to slow down in the coming months as low-base benefits fade away, following a 2.39 percent pickup in the first half, the bank said.

“The board decided to keep interest rates unchanged as global uncertainty might weigh on exports, while private investments slacken amid deteriorating operating conditions,” central bank Governor Perng Fai-nan (彭淮南) told a news conference after the bank’s quarterly policy meeting.

The bank’s rediscount rate is to remain at 1.375 percent, the collateralized loan rate at 1.75 percent and the unsecured loan rate at 3.625 percent.   [FULL  STORY]

Local banks yesterday launched joint mobile payment services based on QR code technology in a bid to tap the fast-growing financial technology (fintech) business and outcompete foreign payment tools.

“Taiwan Pay aims to provide more convenient, quicker payment services using QR code technology via smartphones, which have become a necessity in daily life,” Deputy Minister of Finance Su Jain-rong (蘇建榮) told a news conference.

Mobile payments are divided into two camps: one powered by near field communication (NFC) technology and the other using QR code technology, the ministry said.

The ministry spearheaded the development of Taiwan Pay to help the nation become a regional technology hub and to compete with Apple Pay, Samsung Pay and Android Pay.    [FULL  STORY]
