China Steel Corp (CSC, 中鋼) yesterday raised steel prices by 6.9 percent for deliveries in the second quarter of this year to reflect soaring raw material costs.

The nation’s largest steelmaker said in a statement that it would raise the prices for all products by an average of NT$1,396 per tonne, with an increase of NT$1,495 per tonne for benchmark hot-rolled steel products and a rise of NT$1,600 per tonne for hot-dipped galvanized steel items.

“The price hikes are in line with an upward trend in raw material prices,” executive vice president Wang Shyi-chin (王錫欽) said by telephone, referring to increases in major steelmaking feedstock, such as coking coal and iron ore.

Most of the Kaohsiung-based firm’s Asian rivals, including in Japan and China, have raised prices in response to surging production costs, the company said.[FULL  STORY]

such as the electronic toll collection (ETC) system used on local freeways, could provide an excellent opportunity for Taiwan to develop contracts with foreign countries, according to the Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA).

The non-profit government-sponsored trade promotion institution recently put together a list of electronics and software-combined system solutions, including ETC, U-Bike, e-Gate at airports, police surveillance systems, e-Bus and smart hospitals, as new tools Taiwan can deploy to secure contracts with foreign governments.

ETC allows motorists to drive on the freeway without having to slow down to pay a toll fee, and the e-Bus system informs commuters of bus arrival times. Such systems will be key products in TAITRA’s trade missions this year, the council revealed. [FULL  STORY]

State-run Chang Hwa Commercial Bank’s (CHB, 彰化銀行) government-appointed board members yesterday said that significant earnings improvement have made them confident of maintaining management rights as the lender prepares for board of directors elections later this year.

The move is expected to rile the largest shareholder, Taishin Financial Holding Co (台新金控), which is suing the Ministry of Finance over claims it failed to help Taishin win a majority in the boardroom in line with a 22.5 percent share purchase agreement in 2005.

“CHB’s financial performance improved after shareholders awarded government representatives management rights in 2014, and we will not step aside if they do the same this year,” CHB chairman Chang Ming-daw (張明道) said.    [FULL  STORY]

He said the new airline would definitely need airplanes, but the number of planes has yet to be determined, according to CNA. The airline may buy or lease planes, but it was rather impossible to buy all of the planes it needed, Nieh was cited as saying.
