Taipei, April 29 (CNA) MediaTek Inc., one of Taiwan’s leading integrated circuit designers, 201604290024t0002said Friday that its net profit for the first quarter of 2016 rose from a quarter earlier because of a reduction in non-recurring costs.

At an investor conference, MediaTek reported a net profit for the quarter of NT$4.47 billion (US$138 million), up about 7 percent from the previous quarter with the help of a sequential fall in one-time charges.

It had first quarter earnings per share of NT$2.79, compared with NT$2.83 in the fourth quarter of 2015, the company said.

Despite the increase in net profit for the January-March period, MediaTek’s gross margin fell 0.4 percentage points from a quarter earlier and was down 9.2 percentage points from a year earlier to 38.1 percent.

The IC designer said the falling gross margin resulted from escalating competition in the global smartphone market. Smartphone chips accounted for about 60 percent of MediaTek’s total revenue.     [FULL  STORY]

Advanced Semiconductor Engineering Inc (ASE, 日月光半導體), the world’s largest chip tester and packager, yesterday posted its weakest net profit in three quarters, dragged by weaker-than-expected demand in its system-in-a-package (SiP) business.

ASE provides SiP services for fingerprint modules used in Apple Inc’s iPhones, as well as in wearable devices for other clients.

During the quarter ending March 31, net income contracted 17 percent to NT$4.16 billion (US$128.87 million) from NT$4.99 billion in the previous quarter and declined 7 percent from NT$4.47 billion the previous year.

Despite the decline, net income in the first three months of the year surpassed the NT$3.27 billion projected by BNP Paribas SA analyst Szeho Ng (吳思浩).     [FULL  STORY]

The Taiwan Institute of Economic Research (TIER), one of the country’s leading think tanks, said Thursday that as economic fundamentals remained weak, an index that gauges manufacturing activity flashed a blue light for the 12th consecutive month in March.

The streak of 12 blue lights in a row, which indicates a recession, was the longest in Taiwan since the global financial crisis between July 2008 and May 2009, according to the TIER.

The TIER said that although the composite index of the local manufacturing sector for March rose 0.72 points from a month earlier to 9.98, the score kept the sector in the blue light range, which is below 10.5 points.     [FULL  STORY]

Taipei, April 28 (CNA) The Chiu Su Jen Yoga Center, a leading yoga studio 201604280033t0001chain in Taiwan, which abruptly suspended operations Thursday, will be ordered to stop enrolling new students if it is unable to continue to offer classes, the city government said.

Officials from the city’s Department of Education found during an inspection of its nine yoga studios in Taipei that the entrances were locked and no one would answer the doors, with two outlets posting a notice outside stating that their operations were suspended due to financial difficulties caused by poor management, according to the city government.

The education department said that it will order the center to stop enrolling students according to the Management Rules on Taipei’s Short-term Cram Schools (台北短期補習班管理辦法). If the center is unable to ensure that it will be able to continue to provide courses and safeguard the interests of the students, the department will revoke its license.

It is still unclear how many students would be affected by the suspension of operations.     [FULL  STORY]

TROUGH OVER?The chip tester and packager said demand is picking up after the first quarter, with supply chain inventory correction coming to an end last quarter

Siliconware Precision Industries Co (SPIL, 矽品精密) yesterday posted a 39 percent annual decline in net profit last quarter, but expects demand to pick up significantly in the second half, driven by replacement demand for 4G smartphones.

Net profit plunged to NT$1.6 billion (US$49.57 million) in the three-month period ending March from NT$2.62 billion a year earler. The company lost NT$212 million in the fourth quarter last year due to asset impairments of NT$3.28 billion, partly stemming from its stake in printed circuit board maker Unimicron Technology Corp (欣興電子).

Gross margin shrank to the lowest level in nine quarters at 20.6 percent last quarter, from 26.2 percent in the same period last year, SPIL said in a financial statement.     [FULL  STORY]

ANOTHER FLASH OF BLUE:National Development Council Director Wu Ming-huei said that almost all economic barometers showed negative movements last month

The government’s business monitoring system flashed the 10th straight “blue” signal last month, reflecting a continued weakness in the nation’s economy without signs of a recovery, the National Development Council said yesterday.

The council’s Taiwan Business Indicators stood at 15, shedding one point from February, dragged by slacker imports of machinery and electric equipment, the monthly report said.

“Almost all barometers showed negative movements, although the pace of decline did not widen,” council Director Wu Ming-huei (吳明蕙) told reporters.

A “blue” light indicates economic weakness, while “green” suggests stable conditions and a “red” light signifies overheating.

Chance of a signal change is slim before the second half of the year as the current quarter is a slow season for technology product sales, Wu said.     [FULL  STORY]

Panel makers could face losses this year, despite price rebound

Taiwan’s display panel sector might face losses this year, even though their product prices are expected to rebound in the coming months, an industry researcher said Tuesday.

Display panel prices are likely to rebound during the second and third quarters, on possible closures of factories operated by South Korea’s Samsung Display and a cut by Chinese manufacturers in production of 32-inch panels, said David Hsieh, senior director for displays at the IHS Technology group.

Hsieh said during the 2016 IHS Taiwan Display Conference on the first day of the two-day event that 32-inch panels are no longer mainstream, while shipments of 40-inch and larger products are on the rise.

He forecast that 55-inch and 65-inch panels will see the most rapid growth during the second half of this year.     [FULL  STORY]
