damage from Typhoon Nesat could be completed today, easing power supply concerns, the Cabinet said yesterday.

A transmission tower in the county’s Dongao (東澳) operated by Ho-Ping Power Co (和平電廠) and owned by Taiwan Cement Corp (台灣水泥) was brought down on July 29 as extreme weather swept the nation, reducing the power supply by 4 percent and putting the nation in the grip of a power shortage crisis.

The tower was reconstructed on Friday and the installation of two sets of overhead power lines was finished on Saturday in the quickest repair of a power line in Taiwanese history, the Ministry of Economic Affairs said, adding that the power plant resumed operations yesterday and would reach full capacity today.

revealed that the glass ceiling is still prevalent in Taiwan’s work environment, making women account for only one fifth among workers who make more than NT$1 million (US$33,000) per month.

The report analyzed the income gap of the workforce in the country as well as the gender proportion among the high-income workers. It defined those who earn more than NT$100,000 (US$3,300) per month as high-income workers and those who are paid more than NT$1 million monthly as extremely high-income workers.

The report said that the income of women and senior workers had improved over the years. However, among a few thousand very high-income workers, women took up only 16.8%.    [FULL  STORY]

Tsai addressed members of the National Congress on Judicial Reform upon its conclusion, where she outlined five main tasks for her government to set up timetables and take charge of judicial reform.

“The key to judicial reform lies in follow-up actions. showers likely in coastal areas in the south, according to the Central Weather Bureau (CWB).

The CWB said that high temperatures in Taiwan are forecast to generally range between 33 and 34 degrees Celsius, while the mercury in the greater Taipei area, Keelung and Taoyuan could hit 35 degrees or even reach 36 degrees.

A high pressure system in the Pacific is intensifying its strength so people in Taiwan proper and outlaying islands are expected to take on a sunny weather throughout Saturday, the CWB said.

The bureau said, however, thunderstorms are possible in the mountain areas of the country in the afternoon so people should keep alert over rains for the sake of safety when they take outdoor activities in the mountain area.    [FULL  STORY]
