The Central Weather Bureau (CWB) yesterday said that it might issue a sea supalert for Koppu, adding that it could also issue a land alert if it comes close enough.

CWB data showed that Koppu strengthened at 2am yesterday, but its structure was weakened after making landfall on Luzon at 8am.

The CWB forecast that the typhoon would be further weakened after hovering over Luzon for three more days, after which the typhoon would slow and move northward.

By the time Koppu reaches the Bashi Channel, it would probably be downgraded to a tropical storm again, the CWB said.     [FULL  STORY]

Among Taiwan’s top winners is a group from Kaohsiung’s Cheng Shiu University, which has designed a modular “air bag” system that can prevent ships from sinking.

Taipei, Oct. 17 (CNA) Taiwan can expect at least one more day of clear 201510170019t0001skies before the outer bands of Typhoon Koppu begin to affect the island, the Central Weather Bureau (CWB) said Saturday.

The storm had slowed down and was moving at 6-10 kilometers per hour in a westerly direction, carrying maximum sustained winds of 162 kph, with gusts of up to 198 kph, according to the bureau’s data as of 2 p.m. Saturday.

By 2 p.m. Sunday, the eye of Koppu will be located 670 kilometers south-southeast of Cape Eluani, Taiwan’s southernmost tip, the weather bureau said, warning fishermen east of the Philippines and in the Bashi Channel to stay alert.

With a radius of 200 kilometers, the storm is expected to begin bringing scattered rainfall to northern and eastern parts of Taiwan on Sunday, the bureau said.     [FULL  STORY]

History came alive at the Air Defense Artillery (ADA) Museum on Friday.

Sixteen veterans who defended Taiwan during the second Taiwan Straits 1A-ADA-1-40-x-fullCrisis in 1958 traveled here with their spouses and children to see for themselves that their chapter in American military history will not be forgotten.

ADA Museum Director Jonathan Bernstein said he’s been in contact with Bob Mackintosh, the president of the 2nd Missile Battalion, 71st Artillery Association, for about two years. Mackintosh was one of the fire control officers on the battalion’s deployment to Taiwan in 1958-59.

“This really is a key moment in air defense history, because they were the first expeditionary missile battalion that went overseas on a combat mission. Even though it was peacetime, it was a combat mission with live missiles and provided air defense for an allied nation,” Bernstein said.      [FULL  STORY]

operated by the Hsinchu City-headquartered National Space Organization, is scheduled for launch in February 2016, according to the NSPO.

With over 70 percent of the satellite having been developed domestically, Formosat-5 contains a locally made optical remote sensing payload, a Cassegrain telescope-type remote sensing instrument and the world’s first complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor linear image sensor.

NSPO Director-General Chang Guey-shin said Oct. 15 that the satellite has passed space environment and function tests and is set to take over duties from Formosat-2, which has been in orbit since 2004.     [FULL  STORY]

agreed by 812 out of 891 votes to revoke Legislative Vice Speaker Hung Hsiu-chu’s presidential candidacy after an hour of debate by party delegates.

The next phase is a meeting by the Central Standing Committee to present a new candidate, who is virtually certain to be party chairman Eric Liluan Chu. The new candidate has to be ratified again by the full congress, which should happen before 5 p.m., reports said.

Hung, who was nominated at a similar congress on July 19, fared poorly in opinion polls, leading KMT leaders to believe that the party would not only lose the January 16 presidential election, but also the legislative elections scheduled for the same day.    [FULL  STORY]

peripheral cloud system is expected to bring rain to the northern and eastern parts of Taiwan starting from Sunday, the Central Weather Bureau said Saturday.

As of Saturday morning, Koppu was about 810 kilometers from Taiwan, moving at a speed of 10 km per hour in a westerly direction toward Luzon Island in the Philippines, the bureau said.

The storm was previously expected to move closer to Taiwan next Tuesday, but the bureau said that it would take longer before Koppu brings heavy rain to the island, given that it is now moving at a slower pace.     [FULL  STORY]

Hung Hsiu-chu (洪秀柱) outside, the Chinese Nationalist Party’s (KMT) extempore congress yesterday voted by a wide margin in favor of a motion to rescind Hung’s nomination as the party’s presidential candidate.

The motion was passed by a landslide vote of 812 to 79 at the congress at the National Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall in Taipei in the afternoon, putting an end to Hung’s candidacy, which had been dogged by rumors about the KMT leadership’s plan to replace her since the beginning.

Among the supporters of the motion were President Ma Ying-jeou (馬英九) and Legislative Speaker Wang Jin-pyng (王金平), as well as former KMT chairmen Lien Chan (連戰) and Wu Poh-hsiung (吳伯雄).     [FULL  STORY]

Gemma – “I never gave up”

“I have been here for a very long time. A lifetime actually. I came in 1986,

after having met my then future husband in the Philippines. He was on a business trip in Cebu at the time; we met there, fell in love. He took me with him really quickly afterwards, we married in Taiwan and that is it. My two sons were born here in Taipei.

These past 30 years have been everything but a smooth sailing. The cultural shock when I first arrived hit me really hard. Because my husband was making enough money to sustain our couple, he refused to let me work. He was also against me making Filipino friends, or going to Church on Sundays. As a fervent Catholic, that was difficult to accept. My first few years were very lonely, I used to stay at home most of the time. I could have felt depressed by then, but I chose to make use of my time the best way I could. I forced myself in learning Chinese through the TV programs that were available. Later on, I volunteered in the primary school where my kids were going, and I was able to make many Taiwanese friends, mothers and children alike. It is actually very impressive the extent to which children wanted to help me improve. Thanks to this, I managed to acquire a very strong proficiency in Mandarin and sooner or later, I was asked to join the Saint Christopher’s parish; they needed help with their Filipino community. My husband accepted, and I became the secretary of the parish about 10 years ago.     [FULL  STORY]

explosion slammed prosecutors Friday after they indicted only one organizer of the color dust event, leaving the owners of the park to go free.

The Shihlin District Prosecutors Office announced Friday it would only charge organizer Lu Chung-chi with causing death and injury through negligence in the performance of his job for the June 27 blast at the Formosa Fun Coast Park in Bali, New Taipei City, which eventually led to 12 deaths and sent about 500 people to hospital, many of them with severe burns.

Survivors and their relatives expressed outrage at the prosecutors’ decision, saying Lu had been singled out while eight other suspects including the park owners, the family behind shipping company Wan Hai Lines Ltd., were left off the hook.

The organizer himself complained about rich people being able to escape justice, while he also doubted the official theory that an overheated stage light was responsible for the explosion. Lu claimed that the source of the fire was to be found among the public.
