Taipei, Aug. 6 (CNA) James Soong (宋楚瑜), chairman of Taiwan’s minority People First 201508060004t0001Party (PFP), announced Thursday that he will stand in the presidential election to be held next January.

Soong, 73, made the announcement as Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文), candidate of the opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), appears to enjoy a healthy lead over the Kuomintang’s Hung Hsiu-chu (洪秀柱) in the race to succeed President Ma Ying-jeou, who will step down next May after two four-year terms.

Observers say that Soong is likely to attract some voters who would otherwise vote for Tsai or Hung in the Jan. 16 election. He could also win the support of those who do not like either of the major candidates.     [FULL  STORY]

abandon all plans for legal action against 33 people who occupied the Ministry of Education in a protest against curriculum changes.

The withdrawal of the plans for legal cases was one of the key demands of students sitting outside the MOE for the past six days. After the overnight occupation on July 23-24, 33 people including three journalists had been detained for questioning. One of them, student spokesman Lin Kuan-hua, took his own life last week, leading to a new wave of protests.

After attending a discussion meeting with students in Taichung Wednesday, Wu described the atmosphere as positive and said he and the ministry would not press charges against the MOE intruders.

The student protesters opposed changes to the existing high-school curriculum made by an official review committee. They accuse the changes of pulling certain topics, such as history, back in the direction of a more China-centric view of Taiwan.     [FULL  STORY]

preparations for Typhoon Soudelor, which is expected to pummel the island on Friday and Saturday.

Ferry operators in Taitung County in southeastern Taiwan announced Wednesday that ferry services between Fugang Harbor and Green Island and Orchid Island will be temporarily suspended from Thursday afternoon to Sunday.

The Taiwan Railways Administration will cancel its holiday cruise-style trains on Taiwan’s Father’s Day on Aug. 8 and will issue refunds to people who have made reservations.

The tourist trains travel through scenic spots in mountainous regions that are highly vulnerable to the heavy rains and gusty winds brought by typhoons.     [FULL  STORY]

could be used as a staging base by the Republic of China Air Force’s fighters and maritime patrol aircraft for any potential conflict in the region, according to a report by the Washington-based think tank Center for Strategic and International Studies.

The Spratlys are the most contested island group in the South China Sea, claimed in whole or in part by China, Taiwan, the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia and Brunei. Taiwan exercises control over Taiping, which is no longer the largest island in the chain due to Chinese land reclamation activities. It is garrisoned by coast guard officers.

With a flying radius of 960 kilometers, the ROC Air Force’s P-3C patrol aircraft can carry out reconnaissance operations over southern and central China. Like the Air Force’s F-16 fighter and C-130 cargo plane, the P-3C is capable of landing on the 1,195-metre long airstrip built on Taiping, according to the report.     [FULL  STORY]

controversial curriculum adjustments might withdraw as Typhoon Soudelor approaches, National Taichung First Senior High School Apple Tree Commune Club spokesperson Chen Chien-hsun (陳建勳) said yesterday.

“We will put safety before realizing our demands,” Chen said. “We do not want more people to be hurt as a result of participating in the movement.”

“We will have many more opportunities to continue to push our demands, whether by returning to the Ministry of Education or going elsewhere, so there is no need to gamble everything on this moment,” he said.     [FULL  STORY]

Statues of Taiwan’s former ruler Chiang Kai-shek have been increasingly targeted as the island confronts its authoritarian past.

Though still seen as a hero by some for waging war against communist China under the nationalist Kuomintang (KMT), Chiang has long been a divisive figure. His role in Taiwan’s “White Terror” — a purge of political opponents — and his imposition of martial law led many to brand him a dictator.

TERRITORY

Despite splitting after a civil war, China considers the island as a part of its territory awaiting reunification, by force if necessary.

Fears over increased Chinese influence have grown since 2008 under President Ma Ying-jeou’s KMT government.     [FULL  STORY]

winds of over 350kmh, Typhoon Soudelor has already wreaked havoc on a group of tiny islands in the Pacific Ocean. It is expected to make landfall sometime on Thursday.

The tropical storm ripped through the Northern Marianas on Sunday, which are some 2,500km due east of the Philippines. However, it hasn’t taken any lives yet. Winds have been gusting up to 354kmh (220mph) according to the Joint Typhoon Warning Center, as cited by AFP and it is stronger than Cyclone Pam, so far the strongest storm of 2015, which claimed 15 lives in Vanuatu when it struck five months ago.

Typhoon Soudelor became 2015’s fifth super typhoon on Monday. A super typhoon is defined by sustained wind speeds of at least 241kmh (150mph).

“I’ve seen multiple primary power poles down; I’ve seen cars flipped over the road; I’ve seen lots of torn roofs,” John Hirsh, executive director of the American Red Cross in Saipan, told Pacific Daily News, as cited by AFP.     [FULL  STORY]

The Toufen police precinct had received tipoffs since early July about the presence of runaway Indonesian migrant workers in the township and launched an investigation, the Miaoli County Police Department said.

After verifying the presence of the migrant workers in the dilapidated dormitory, the police carried out a raid early Tuesday and detained a van that was about to leave with the 20 Indonesians aboard.     [FULL  STORY]
