Handwashing critical to avoid infecting children

SALMONELLA: A 10-day-old infant who had serious complications likely got it from their parents, who did not thoroughly wash their hands after handling raw meat

Parents should wash their hands thoroughly before feeding toddlers, doctors at Linkou Chang Gung Memorial Hospital said after a 10-day-old infant became critically ill due to salmonella infection.

The hospital recently admitted three cases of infants less than one year old who had serious salmonella gastroenteritis, with the youngest — 10 days old — developing serious complications, including necrotizing enterocolitis, gastrointestinal perforation, peritonitis and septicemia.

Salmonellosis is most common between July and October, and it is usually caused by eating raw or undercooked food, or drinking contaminated water, hospital deputy superintendent Chiu Cheng-hsun (邱政洵) said.

Most people with salmonellosis suffer acute gastroenteritis, and children younger than five, especially infants less than one year old, are the most susceptible to salmonella infection, he said.    [FULL  STORY]

Taiwanese officials say the men are not spies, and that they were forced to confess.

WARSAW, (BM) – Almost from the first days of this year, we have experienced a series of tensions and armed conflicts around the world (one of the key Iranian generals has been killed, the war in Libya is underway, there is a strong tension in the Mediterranean Sea, the war in Nagorno-Karabakh …).

Thus, there are growing concerns that the current events taking place around the China-Taiwan-United States relationship may escalate to a level that unfortunately builds a specific critical mass, leading directly to the emergence of another dangerous global crisis in the near future. The Institute for Security and Strategy Foundation and Defence24.pl invite you to read the commentary by Dr. Jacek Raubo, president of FIBiS, regarding the current tensions in the region.

So far, the litmus test of the growing tension around Taiwan has been the subsequent Chinese military exercises and, above all, the flights of combat aircraft belonging to the Chinese People’s Liberation Army’s air force. It should be emphasized that in the latter case, especially in the still ongoing 2020, a significant intensification of a specific ritual was noticeable, in the form of flights of Chinese combat machines (fighter, multi-purpose, bomber and Chinese AWACS) and picking up Taiwanese machines that could intercept them .

Currently, it can be noticed that Beijing has also included broadly understood intelligence issues in its activities in the information sphere, and on a mass scale. More precisely, it is about revealing more spy networks that were supposed to try to infiltrate China on the orders of the Taiwanese services. There is a statement in the Chinese media that the local counterintelligence managed to track down hundreds of personal assets of the Taiwanese side. Everything within the so-called Thunder-2020 campaign.    [FULL  STORY]

Taipei, Oct. 15 (CNA) The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) on Thursday expressed regret over China's recent election to the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC), questioning the country's longtime human rights records.

"It was regrettable that China was reelected as a member of the UNHRC," the ministry's spokesperson Joanne Ou (歐江安) said in a regular press briefing on Thursday.

"The Chinese government has long been under strong criticisms by the democratic world for harming human rights," she said.

She cited instances that showed China was not fit to play a leading role in human rights issues.

Fostering local talent in the digital technology sector, expanding efforts to hire talent internationally and improving bilingual education in Taiwan are the three goals that should be met to ensure that the nation plays a critical role in the dynamic restructuring of the global supply chain in the post-COVID-19 era, the National Development Council (NDC) said yesterday.

The council made the remarks in a briefing to Premier Su Tseng-chang (蘇貞昌) at the weekly Cabinet meeting.

The government would promote measures to encourage companies to invest in fostering talent, increase higher-education capacity and boost university-industry colearning experiences, the council said.

We hope to increase the number of students in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics field, so the nation would have more locally fostered experts in digital technology, it said.    [FULL  STORY]

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — One of the more unusual ways to celebrate Taiwan's National Day (Oct. 10) has emerged, with a video surfacing that shows divers holding both the flags of Taiwan and Palau underwater to mark the occasion.

Although the Wuhan coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic continues to rage across the globe, Palau has managed to keep the deadly virus in check. Not only was a reception for National Day held at Taiwan's Palau embassy as usual, but Taiwan Ambassador Wallace Chow (周民淦), embassy staff, and Taiwanese citizens also posed for celebratory photos with the flags of the two countries.

On Saturday (Oct. 10), Chow, who has served as the ambassador to Palau since April 2018, posted a video showing himself and nine other divers holding the flags of Palau and Taiwan while standing underwater on the seabed in the South Pacific nation. Superimposed on the video are the words "Happy Birthday Taiwan" and "Alii Palau," meaning "Hello Palau."

At the top of the Facebook post, Chow wrote, "Today is Oct. 10, 2020/1010 I love you, I love you! Whatever you say, Whatever you say! What a wonderful number! Happy Birthday Republic of China! Congratulations from Palau!"    [FULL  STORY]

Taipei, Oct. 13 (CNA) A light rail system being planned for Keelung City is to be upgraded to connect the Greater Taipei mass rapid transit network in a major infrastructure development aimed at boosting regional connectivity, officials said Tuesday.

The plan means that a new MRT branch line linking Nangang in Taipei and Badu in Keelung via New Taipei will be able to handle higher passenger volume and will also be able to be controlled automatically, Minister of Transportation and Communications Lin Chia-lung (林佳龍) said after reaching a consensus with the mayors of the two special municipalities and Keelung City.

The Taipei-Keelung line will be able to accommodate 10,000-15,000 passenger trips per hour instead of the 5,000 as originally planned for the light rail, explained Keelung Mayor Lin Yu-chang (林右昌).

"The upgrading of the Keelung light rail system will be a big step forward for Keelung," Lin went on, adding that it is something that has been called for by local residents for the past 30 years.
